- The new husband of a jewelry store owner is critically injured accidentally walking in on a jewel heist. CBI soon suspects that the heist was pulled off with help from the inside--specifically one of the owner's two nephews.
- During a CBI benefit sponsored by the Doverton jewelry firm where Jane performs successfully, Carl Ward, husband of owner Esther, interrupts a robbery but is shot and sent into the hospital by a diamond robber. Jane suspects an inside job. Ex-con Doyle Murphy is found shot in his apartment, last visited by ex-brother-in-law Donny Culpepper, to whom he owed money. The team also finds links with Ester's nephews Tom and George Doverton. Jane sets the trap.—KGF Vissers
- In a CBI fund raiser party promoted by Doverton jewelry, owned by the hostess Esther Doverton, Patrick Jane performs a show to help the agency. Meanwhile, there is a heist in the firm and Esther's husband Carl Ward surprises the thief and is shot. The CBI assumes the investigation and soon the suspect Doyle Murphy is found shot in the head in his apartment. The CBI investigation leads to his brother-in-law Donny Culpeper, but Patrick suspects Esther's nephews Tom and George.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- A security guard locks up at night at Doverton and Company. Inside, we hear someone singing "Danny boy" and watch someone rapel down into the jewelry store.
The people listening to the song include a gussied up Lisbon and Cho at a cocktail fundraiser.
Back in the jewelry store the thief gets into a vault.
At the cocktail party, Lisbon introduces herself and Cho to Mrs. Doverton, who sponsored them for the party but has no idea who they are.
The thief works on the vault.
Mrs. Doverton introduces them to her nephews Thomas and George. Lisbon says a member of their team will be performing magic tricks for entertainment later.
The thief finds enormous diamonds.
Jane watches Rigsby and Van Pelt enter the room together, all glowy.
An announcer introduces Patrick Jane and he begins his routine by tossing aside an egg he brought, saying he won't be performing magic after all. He goes off script and asks the rich folk if they ever stop to think about what "lucky bastards" they are. He talks about all the pain in the world as we see someone in a tux coming upon the thief.
They grapple and the man gets shot. Jane gets everyone in the room to agree to donate to the CBI, then he tells a man to reach into his jacket pocket and show everyone what's inside. He pulls out a baby chick. Everyone pulls out their checkbooks.
Mrs. Doverton gets a call. She says Carl's been shot.
The team goes to the Doverton jewelry store with the nephews. Jane plays with the jewelry. Carl was their aunt's husband. They met at the club tennis tournament.
Jane thinks the nephews resented their uncle, which they deny.
Back at CBI HQ they watch security camera footage from nearby buildings. They got a license plate and traced it to a safe cracker named Doyle Murphy.
Jane thinks it seems too easy, and this sort of heist usually involves more than one person.
The diamonds were supposed to go out the next day, too.
Jane smells inside job.
Rigsby is doing background checks. Jane's early money is on Carl, the guy who got shot.
Rigsby and Van Pelt drive to the longterm motel where the thief lives. Rigsby is sure Jane knows about them. Van Pelt asks if this is all their relationship is going to be, sneaking around. Conveniently, they arrive at the motel before Rigsby has to answer.
The clerk tells them a couple hours ago a big guy in a cowboy hat and pimped out truck was here. They knock on his door and then go in. It's empty, but Doyle Murphy is dead in the closet of a single gunshot wound to the forehead.
The same gun was used to shoot Murphy and Carl. They didn't find any jewels.
Jane has them bring the hotel clerk in and hypnotizes him to get more info about the cowboy. He remembers him in a bail bonds shirt.
Rigsby and VP check it out, a real dump. They find Donald Culpepper in a hot tub in back in a junk yard. He says Doyle wasn't at the hotel when he got there. Doyle was his ex-brother-in-law.
They take him in.
Lisbon grudgingly concedes to Jane that Carl was using an alias and owed an ex wife in New Jersey $90,000. He also had a record for forging checks.
At the hospital, his current wife says she knew about his past. Jane calls her a liar. Carl's improving. Mrs. Doverton walks around the corner from them and takes a moment to soak in what she learned.
Donald Culpepper says Murphy owed him $200,000. But he liked the guy, even put him through rehab when he got out of prison. He says he owned the type of gun that killed Doyle, but he sold it to Doyle.
Lisbon and Jane think Culpepper was in on it.
VP comes in with old security camera footage that shows Tom Doverton with Murphy in the store.
They bring him in but have nothing to hold him on.
Cho goes to ask Culpepper about him, but finds the cowboy is gone.
Tom's aunt and brother pick him up.
Jane chats with Culpepper at the elevator, after just having let him go. Jane tells him they let him go because he's stupid. Either he didn't know about the jewelry heist and should have, or he did and he'll lead them to a clue. Culpepper takes issue with Jane and warns him to watch his back as Lisbon walks up with the Dovertons.
Lisbon calls Jane out later for just wanting to put Culpepper and the Dovertons near each other and watch for recognition.
The coroner comes to show the team the ginormous diamond she found in Doyle Murphy's lower intestine - the same diamond we saw him examining during the heist.
As they're discussing, Jane picks up the diamond and smashes it with a fire extinguisher. It shoots around the room like a rocket. Jane sheepishly admits it's not the fake he thought it was. He'll get right on looking for it.
Down on their hands and knees, they try to figure out the connection between Murphy and Tom Doverton. Jane suggests rehab.
Jane and Lisbon visit the facility where Culpepper put Murphy. Lisbon's about to ID herself when Jane starts explaining about Lisbon's drinking. She goes along. As the clinic director gives her a tour, Jane pokes around his office, picking his file cabinet with a paper clip.
The director goes back to his office to find Jane at his desk. Murphy's sponsor wasn't Tom Doverton, it was George.
They go talk to Tom, who was warned by the clinic director that they'd be coming. Tom says George isn't there, but Jane guesses he's hiding behind the door.
George comes out and says he only lied to hide his addiction, but insists he had nothing to do with the robbery. On their way out a messenger brings a ransom letter for their aunt.
Back at CBI, they confirm their aunt is gone. The team thinks it might be Culpepper. Lisbon tells the brothers to stall the kidnappers.
At the appointed call time, George answers the call. The voice is scrambled. He tells the caller he doesn't have the jewels. They hear a gunshot. George runs off leaving Tom alone with the phone. It rings again. He answers it and offers the kidnapper money to leave them alone. He says he he's not giving over the diamonds.
Then we see Jane speaking into a voice scrambler on the other side of the glass. He gets Tom to confess to killing Murphy and they arrest him.
They tells Mrs. Doverton it was her nephew.
She goes back to the hospital to see her husband but wait outside his room. Jane's there, too. He asks Carl if his marriage was a scam. Carl doesn't like the way Jane's talking about his wife, the best thing that ever happened to him, and say so, running him off. Mrs. Doverton watches and smiles.
Back at the office, Rigsby finds the diamond under Jane's couch with the dust bunnies. Jane sees him and tells him he wouldn't say anything if he wanted to keep it. Rigsby smells trap and hands it to Jane. Then Van Pelt walks by and Jane tells her to check her pocket. He tells her Rigsby put something there. Rigsby says Jane's messing with them. Jane says again that if she wanted to keep it, he wouldn't say anything. Their secret is safe with him.
