Numb3rs

Numb3rs season 3 — some thoughts

I’m still watching and enjoying the Ebbs brothers solving crimes in LA for the FBI, but coming to the end of season 3, it’s all feeling a little dark. I still recommend this six-season FreeVee show, but also need a little lighter relief here and there.

It’s not all grim crime solving, as various interpersonal relationships move forward (slowly), Dom Ebbs (Rob Morrow) sees a psychiatrist and a few once per season guests drop in. More curiously is how counterpart scientist Larry (Peter MacNicol) has to leave mid-season (filming another show) and mathematical genius Charlie is left dealing with new Head of everything Mildred (Millie) Finch (played by Kathy Najimy). Mildred becomes a part of solving many crimes, has a relationship with Ebbs senior (Judd Hirsch) then airbrushed out of the show when MacNicol returns.

As to Larry? He’d popped up to the Space Station for a few months. As you do. It gave Buzz Aldrin a cameo, but is a little close to shark jumping for my tastes.

Back to the darkness

For a show set in LA, there’s no glamour. It’s all murder, street crime and terror attack. Of course a show released in 2007, starting in 2005 will have been conceived in the long shadow of 911, and public taste was treated to a whole range of darker topics.

Compare to shows such as Castle or Lucifer, which manage crime and relationships (and some humour). There’s a place for everything, but I’m just comparing.

Meanwhile, season 4 is next up, just got half-a-dozen other things to watch!
