Sources today revealed the first plot information for "Play With Fire", the penultimate instalment of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's third season.

In the episode, an accident causes a massive explosion in the Las Vegas crime lab. Greg Sanders is seriously injured, his back covered in second-degree chemical burns, and is hospitalised. Sara is also caught in the blast, resulting in cuts all over her face and arms. In the aftermath of the explosion, Grissom moves throughout the injured, checking his people, and comforts Sara, even helping to extract some shards of glass from her arm while the paramedics are busy with other patients..

Surveying the scene the next day with Dr. Renee Cavallo, the assistant director of the Las Vegas crime lab, Grissom resolves that the lab is still usable for the most part: only DNA has been destroyed, though the print lab has also been affected. While Grissom is confident the CSIs' work will not be affected, Cavallo reminds him of the Tom Haviland murder case ("The Accused Is Entitled") and how the defence team went to great lengths to cast doubt on the reliability of the evidence — an unscrupulous lawyer could use the explosion as an excuse to get their client off.

Cavallo is a woman on a mission — she wants to know exactly what happened, and who is to blame. Grissom announces that he has put Catherine in charge of the investigation, as he is working a murder case. But will Catherine like what she discovers?

While the B-story centres around the murder Grissom is working on with Nick and Sara, the episode will also reportedly contain an important plot development regarding Grissom's hearing.

Please note that the above plot details have not been confirmed by CBS, Alliance Atlantis or Bruckheimer films, and until such time you should treat this information as you would any other rumour. The information comes from an early draft of the script and details may change before the episode goes to air.

"Play With Fire" will likely air in May, 2003.<center></center>
