It’s officially official: Sex and the City is returning to the small screen via HBO Max in what is being dubbed “a new chapter” of the storied franchise. The news was confirmed late Sunday on social media by returning leads Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, who will reprise their signature roles as Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda, respectively.
Per HBO Max, the series — which will bear the new title And Just Like That… — “will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”
The 10-episode, half-hour series is scheduled to begin production in New York in late spring.
As we reported in December, Kim Cattrall — who has been very public about her desire to put the franchise, her co-stars and her character of Samantha, behind her — will not be involved in the quasi-seventh season.
In an October 2017 interview with Piers Morgan, Cattrall implored SATC‘s creative team to recast the role of Samantha with a non-white actress. “It’s a great part,” she said at the time. “I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it. And another actress should play it. Maybe they could make it an African-American Samantha Jones, or a Hispanic Samantha Jones.” (Will SATC kill off Samantha? Should it? More on that here.)
The original series, of course, ran for six seasons on HBO and spawned two movies. The show garnered numerous Emmys during its time on the air — including wins for stars Parker and Nixon.
Longtime Sex and the City EP Michael Patrick King will serve as showrunner/EP on the revival. Parker, Nixon and Davis will also serve as EPs.
Maybe they’ll make another character entirely to fill the fourth place. That could be fun! (A diverse casting ofc)
So it’s confirmed it’s a series and not a limited event series?
I hope so too. I think Vanessa Williams would be an awesome casting choice!
Ooo, that’s a great idea!
So happy this is moving forward, this is Kim’s loss.
I don’t care what anybody says, I’m totally here for this. Really excited.
as am i
Do the 3 of them really need money that bad?
Kim was the only good thing about this show and despite her the 2 movies sucked big time so imagine how bad this will be
Who says it’s about money? This is literally their career lmao. It’s an acting job. They are actresses.
Syndication money became barely anything after so long and Kristin has been on a reality glop( Labir of Live),Kim on a freshman glop( Filhty Rich)& Cynthia had a failed govt bid.
Am delighted about this, but will no way watch if there’s any point in the series where Big dies.
Why HBO Max and not HBO, which I’ve paid full price forever. HBO Max is free with a smart TV? Is that how it goes? I don’t have a smart TV and will not pay an extra dime for HBO.
I believe HBO Max is the same price as HBO in most markets. Everything available on HBO is available on HBO Max.
Boy this goes to show how bad At&t botched the whole what is Hbo max launch.
It should have been made very easy for long-time HBO subscribers to watch HBO Max offerings. I’ll most likely never use it due to my issues with the potential of inadequate wireless and not wanting to watch on my computer and having no need for a tablet.
So due to being a long-time paying subscriber to HBO, I get HBO Max included but can only watch HBO Max on a smart TV? I refuse to get another TV when my current flat-screen non-smart TV is perfectly fine. Why did they bother with this Max thing? I wonder how many HBO subscribers are in my shoes. (Really glad they ran Pete Davidson’s Staten Island movie on HBO. It’s sitting there on DVR waiting to be watched.)
You do get HBO Max as an HBO subscriber and can watch on a computer. I do! You don’t need a smart TV.
Unless I got myself a tablet, watching TV on my computer ain’t for me. I sit on my arse enough as it is! Thanks for the input, Jo!
I’ve got 2 words for you: Google Chromecast
Thanks, S, for your Chromecast comment. I will maybe learn about it.
But there’s plenty of stuff on HBO Max that is not offered on HBO, so that shuts me out unless I want to watch on my computer. I was really glad when Pete Davidson’s movie ran on HBO. HBO needs to do that with all HBO Max offerings.
If you pay for HBO through a cable or satellite service you probably get HBO Max for free. Try signing up for it.
If you are paying for HBO, you probably have HBO Max. That is the only reason I have HBO Max!! 😁
Telephile Dave and Thomas Wood: I haven’t called Spectrum about this because I’m afraid my monthly bill will go up. $210/month is way too much as it is for phone, internet, and TV (1 TV + HBO + DVR). Why wouldn’t HBO Max have shown up long ago on my channel line-up? Yeah, I’ve gotta call. Thanks.
HBO Max is not a channel. It’s a streaming service. Most people have some type of smart access nowadays. Be it on a smart TV or tablet or phone. Do you have a smartphone?
I use an iPhone but not going to watch TV on a tiny screen. Have no need for a tablet. I could easily buy a smart TV. I resent HBO adding new stuff outside of the HBO channel. If I had a smart TV, sounds like HBO Max is not DVRable. Is that correct?
If you get HBO, you get HBO for free. If you don’t have a smart TV, get a cheap device like an Amazon Fire Stick or Roku to watch apps on your TV..
*different Brian than the one who already posted*
Ah, yes, the Roku. I have a feeling that the router in my office won’t provide adequate wireless to my TV in bedroom due to a thick wall. I never bring laptop or phone into bedroom. I’ll have to give that a whirl to test that. Thanks for the Roku reminder, Brian.
Down load the HBO Max app and watch on iPad ,Roku or computer
I’m skeptical about my router in my office will be able to provide a good wireless connection through a thick all into my bedroom where my TV is located. If I acquire a Roku and test it, I’ll report back. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
They should NOT recast the part. Add a new friend eventually, but to bring the show back with a “new Samantha”, especially a minority, won’t mesh with the memories of the original series. Samantha had had cancer at one point in the show. So, kill off the character. Let’s see the humane side of the three remaining ladies as they struggle with mourning. Life goes on. If they go with a minority actress, it would only be show show they are inclusive and trying to fit in with current social temperament. Those four ladies did not have minorities in their lives back in the day. So, it would seem out of character for them to suddenly embrace ethnic cultures. It’s no disrespect to people of color; it’s just sticking with the original milieu of the series. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Jennifer Hudson was there.
Do NOT explain Samantha’s disappearance as from a recurrence of her breast cancer, which was caught early and successfully treated! It would be a discouraging message to all breast cancer survivors—and it would be a false one.
It would be false that you can have Cancer more than once?
Agree 100%. Why on Earth would they change Samantha’s race? And what, pretend she was a different race all along? I am all for inclusivity, but that idea is just ridiculous. Either have her move to another country, they can mention her in the first episode and let it drop after that, or kill her off. Her cancer recurred and she passed. Maybe down the road Kim will change her mind and want to make a cameo. Having her move far away would be best. Then they can bring in whomever to even up the foursome.
I wonder if they’re going to keep some of planned plots for the third movie in this, like killing off Mr. Big. Or if they’ve scrapped that completely and are doing something different for the revival.
Maybe they can bring back Jennifer Hudson’s character from the first movie to fill the Samantha gap?
Hi
I am very exieted to see it but I am from germany maybe you can tell me how I can see it . Thanks stay save and a good New 2021
Yeah! I can’t wait. I watch all the reruns all the time I will as long as they are shown. Love that show and the actresses!!
I also loved SJP in her series “divorce”. I wish that would have stayed on longer
Also there are no re runs. I would enjoy seeing that again.
Big fan of Divorce, too. Great cast, dialog, terrific episodes. I was very disappointed that it ended.
Bad idea. Think the show should be over
Those that approved this clearly haven’t seen the second movie.
Oh please don’t. Please. That second movie ruined the whole series for me. The first movie wasn’t all that great either. There comes a time when you have to stop going to the well. Please move on.
Why does everyone hate the movies? Lol. I liked them. I am sad there is no Samantha but I’m excited to see how they all grow. Obviously, when it was first on it was a real different culture.
The first four seasons were great. The last two and the movies were rubbish. Carrie is one of the worst characters on tv ever. They could create so many new and interesting shows but they go back to this? Ridiculous.
Is there Mr Big??? I know in the original 3rd movie movie they were killing him off. I hope he comes back.
Glad it will be back… however, nothing will get me to pay for another service, including HBO Max!
They absolutely should not add a forth character. People know and care about the core characters from the original and adding a new character to the core group would just make them a forth wheel.
I wish they would just call it Sex and the City: And Just Like That… because not having the SATC in the title makes it feel like a completely different show.
If Kim Cattrail can’t or won’t be in the series, then just cast her being married and living in another country
No one could or ever will as good in that part as her.
Hope they don’t kill her off but maybe they will to be spiteful
Carrie, Charlotte and miranda are married. Charlotte and Miranda are mothers. I certainly hope that the show isn’t going to focus on their sex lives anymore. As any married couple can tell you, there isn’t much of a sex life after you’re married and there’s even less with children.
I do hope they invite in a new fourth friend with some new style dimension and diversity. They shouldn’t make the character off of Samantha. They need something original. Having said that, I feel like it’s pretty selfish that Kim Cattrall wouldn’t at least consider a small part in the film of for no other reason than for the legions of loyal fans. Don’t tell me that they wouldn’t have paid her fortune for a few months worth of work. No matter how bad things were between her and SJP, I still thinks it’s selfish and a slap in the Dave to fans .
*slap in the face to fans
Is this gonna be a limited series or the first season of a full-on revival?
It’s only a limited series
Enough with the diversity pandering it’s ridiculous
what he said!
