The title of this week’s Grey’s Anatomy — “Throwing It All Away” — sounds pretty negative. Until you realize that what Grey Sloan’s doctors are pitching is some of their baggage. Once it’s on the curb, these emotional hoarders — in particular, Arizona, Owen and Stephanie — look poised for new beginnings… some of which just happen to look a lot like old times. Read on, and I’ll give you the deets.

A MARRIAGE WITH LEGS | The hour’s biggest turning point comes in Callie and Arizona’s relationship. Though Callie’s day starts bad (the government’s hold on Derek’s sensors puts their research on ice) and gets worse (turns out, Leah’s complaint wasn’t lodged against Arizona but Callie), it ends kinda fantastically. After Stephanie accidentally breaks Arizona’s prosthetic leg in a highly acrobatic gurney incident — and she and the missus have another fight — Arizona tearfully explains the journey that she’s been on to feel like herself again post-amputation. Now, not only is that journey just about concluded, but along the way, she’s realized, “I don’t need much to be happy… but I do know that I need you.” To which Callie responds by — and my heart lurched when she did! — walking out. Then, thankfully — my heart returning to its usual spot — she comes back… with Arizona’s old roller sneakers! Finally, the episode ends with Callie helping her wife relearn how to skate, because to her thinking, Arizona shouldn’t have to give up squat!
TAKE TWO | Meanwhile, having gotten past what Richard calls her “shenanigans” with Shane (and their awkwardness in the aftermath of his meltdown), Cristina questions Owen about his break-up with Emma. “I can’t tell if you’re happy or sad” about it, he says. “Neither can I,” she admits. Later, he playfully accuses her of being so eager to see him “squared away” with everything that he wants so that she doesn’t have to feel guilty anymore about not giving him what he wants. (Which last week he made us all dizzy by telling Emma he didn’t want anymore.) Dunno where this can possibly lead, but the sparks, they are a-flyin’.

A CLEAN BREAK | After Stephanie claims a second hit-’n’-run victim — this time, Jackson — and the exes are tasked with filling out accident reports at the same desk, he seizes the opportunity to try to apologize for dumping her in the most humiliating way possible. (That is, he apologizes for dumping her in a humiliating way. He doesn’t apologize in a humiliating way.) She isn’t interested, though. She’s also done avoiding him at the hospital. Why? As of then and there, “to me, you just exist,” she sums up, “because I don’t care.” Hashtag: OverIt!
LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER? | Off Alex’s rant to the board last week, he’s suspended from surgery for three days instead of just getting a slap on the wrist for his romantic infraction, and Jo’s moved out of pediatrics. But Mer thinks she’s got the solution to their problem when she offers Alex a “love contract” from HR that will give the couple permission to… well, couple! Trouble is, he’s reluctant to even ask Jo to sign it or to make any waves whatsoever. “If you make it too hard,” he fears, “she’s gonna be like Izzie, and she’ll walk.” Aww…
Okay, your turn. What did you think of the episode? Were you satisfied with the Calzona resolution? Hit the comments!
Love Calzona, love jolex !
Calzona was great. But also the long awaited Arizona/Cristina moment… beautiful.
Not gonna mince words: this episode kinda sucked. Not to sound insensitive but I am so over Arizona and her whining. I’m over Mer, too. Also not a fan of the 80’s covers and I’m so disappointed that’s all we’re going to hear for the rest of the season.
This was the perfect episode. Loved the Crowen moments and I’m not even a shipper. Loved that there was limited Shane. Loved Mer’s expression when Alex caught her in the OR. Loved the Arizona and Cristina moment. Its refreshing to see that at least there is some continuity from the crash. Most of all, loved the Calzona moments. I dont think that the cheating and the blow up during last season’s finale will ever be properly addressed so I will take this episode as a reset button. Arizona finally acknowledged her selfishness and Callie finally showed some emotion about Arizona’s tryst with Leah. And the fact that the complaint was against Callie actually makes sense. And that last scene was absolutely perfect. This is my new favorite episode of the season. Well done Shonda. Well done. Oh, and the guy that wanted the kidney back did an excellent job. We went from creepy to heartbreaking in a second.
He was on Body of Proof….whee!
Really? Individually, everything was good-great, but cumulatively, it was boring & dull.
Last week was better & next week should be even better than that.
And to think you call yourself a Grey’s Anatomy fan ;)
Whether or not you like something is completely subjective. Im sure there will be people who feel more ambivalence or even dislike towards the episode. I happen to be a huge Calzona fan so I loved it. I’ve also hated what’s been done to Crown and on this episode they managed to still address what continues to be their fundamental challenge with our getting dark about it. I thought it was an episode that answered several questions and addressed serious issues without causing the viewer to get suicidal. I loved it. And I’m a card carrying Grey’s fan. You are welcome to your own un-enlightened opinion. :-)
Ditto…I LOVE it too! Best of the S10, Callie and Arizona TALKED for a change! YEAH!!!
Arizona even expressed her BIGGEST FEAR to Callie….major progress for them! Shonda we need more Christina and Arizona moments, that was a gr8 scene they shared about the plane crash and cute lil baby Oscar!
aww Alex! My heart just hurt a little for him when he talked about being scared of Jo leaving like Izzie did :(
I am absolutely infuriated with the Cristina and Owen storyline. He is NOT good for Cristina. He is emotionally manipulative and even cruel at times. The only ending for Cristina Yang that will make me angrier than her being killed off is if she ends up with Owen.
I want them to end up together so that Owen can exit the show with her, mostly for many of the reasons you mentioned. His character is very one-note right now and I’m just done with him. Let’s bring in someone with an intriguing storyline to give this show new blood. Owen is just played out and I can’t bear much more.
I also do not like Owen & Christina together. There have probably been 2 times I didn’t mind the pairing but for the most part, can’t stand it. Their love scenes seem as though he is attacking her! *shudder* It will upset me too if she ends up with him, though if that means he leaves & Webber goes back as Chief then it’s all good.
That he is not good for her it was seen since season six. Hoping she chooses her job over him.
Great episode! Callie and Arizona’s tumultuous journey seems to have come to an end (thank goodness!) and all is how it should be. :)
Leah Murphy is a piece of trash.
Come on! Leah Murphy is totally entitled to have made a complaint against Callie for discrimination in the workplace because she had a short relationship with her on-off-on-off-wife. Those are angry management issues Callie should take care on, because the point is not that she was pissed at Leah, she just could not be pissed at Arizona if they wanted to move on so she redirected that on Leah. which was not entitled to.
I have accepted this episode as a reset and accept Leah’s choice and reasons. That doesnt mean that this development is altogether logical. In the OR, Callie was pushing Leah so she could learn. When Leah lost her cool and drilled through the patient’s leg, Callie still didnt know about her affair with Arizona. So Callie was not trying to be vindictive. She was trying to teach and encourage her. It was Leah who was freaked out about working with Callie and in her panic made a mistake. All Callie did after that was try to salvage the situation. Yes she was angry, but that didnt happen until after Leah screwed up. So, what we had last night was a rewriting of history to make all the pieces fit. So, yes, Leah is a bit of a loser. Arizona and Callie may have left her off the hook for the sake of moving forward but the viewer as the consumer of this often flawed product, is a bit more cynical and demanding and less prone to tolerate inconsistencies.
Owen and Yang are horrible for each other and he is gonna look like a fool when she hits the road at the end of the season. I wish Jo would have told whatshername that she was just Jackson’s rebound girl and she never stood a chance with him. I loved the end of the episode with the return of the RollerSneakers. Calzona is back in action!
Who’s to say Owen won’t go with Yang? I think they’re going to ride off in the sunset with each other. I’d hate it bc as mer said yang doesn’t have time for people who want things she doesn’t want. Cristina is her own person. She should just end up with herself.
The thing is, they are bringing back Burke. Even Shonda says that Burke coming back is imperative to Christina/Sandra leaving the show. I think they will finally be together. I’m excited to see him come back and what the writers have planned!
I thought Meredith is the one who said “I can’t tell if you are happy or sad” when Christina heard about Owen and Emma breaking up. ?
She did, the article is mistaken
Yep. It was Mer.
Did Cristina and Arizona mention Lexie when the talked about the plane crash? I haven’t seen it yet but I need too know.
Lexie and Mark
Does the recapper watch this show? Could he not have touched on the little girl getting the double amputee or the baby found in the dumpster and connected them to what the doctors were feeling?
Never read the recap. Its always a complete miss and infuriating to the reader. Just read the conversation that takes place here in the comments. Thats the only part worth reading.
I really, really liked this episode. I think it was because we focused more on the originals rather than the interns. Although they were there, for once it felt like the story line didn’t revolve around them. However, still missing Richard a lot this season. Cast of grey’s is just too big. We need another causality fest only to not bring in tons of new people lol.
I feel so bad for Stephanie, but she’s handling it like a pro! That stupid April on the other hand would’ve been acting like a silly child and still receive the sympathy vote. Shondra please bring a real man into Stephanie’s life.
loved the episode, but I’m puzzled about one thing – who is the Jerry that Christina and Arizona were smiling about in their scene together at the end?
Jerry was the pilot in the plane crash – he was paralyzed.
Thanks – I’d forgotten about the pilot – love the way keeps the history alive.
I loved this episode. Yay, Stephanie – I am so glad she finally confronted Jackson and walked away from the conversation on her own terms. Yes, I know Jackson and April belong together, but it was still a crappy way for the both of them to leave their others.
Poor Callie, what a horrible day! But look on the bright side – it can only get better. Now that Arizona has worked through her identity crisis (understandbly – I loved her final explanation of what’s been going on with her), hopefully they can grow in love. And it looks like she’s going to challenge Derek for their research work – I’m all for that.
Other notable moments for me: Cristina and Arizona – I kinda feel like Cristina’s starting her farewell tour, but it was still a great moment. Cristina and Shane – I liked that she continues to encourage him to be a great surgeon, despite everything else that has happened between and around them. The old surgeon that mentored her last year, I still see his influence, and I like it. Leah and Arizona – We may not like Leah, but what she told Arizona was still true.
Awwww, Alex!
Stephanie is naive if she ever thought she and Jackson had a real relationship. She knew where he was at and still jumped in bed with him. No empathy for her.
Yet Jackson gave her crap over Shane kissing her and for questioning him about not wanting to go to April’s wedding.
Trusting that your boyfriend is sincere when he expresses deep interest in you is hardly naive..
Didn’t Jackson tell her he loved her once and she was hesitant to say it back and ended up not saying anything? That seems to have been forgotten.
No. Jackson never said he loved her but in S10 Ep 12 she nearly said it to him but backed out at the last moment
Yawn. Boring episode.
Just a guess: you are flummoxed or perhaps just irritated by the minimal Mer/Der presence…
I liked this episode, especially Stephanie nailing Jackson with the gurney, I would have liked it even more if it was April, maybe she’ll get her next week. hahah
Crowen is breaking my heart. They get each other, they love each other. Its like they know everything about the other but cant be together. I wanna cry bc Sandra is leaving and they wont get their happy ending. Hope they do when the show ends for good.
The Calzona SL is getting old, i love them but its getting really old.
i find Jolex to be the most annoying ship mostly bc Jo is a pain.
Hate that Meredith always forgives Derek so easily.
All in all, my fav thing about this ep was Crowen by far. I didnt realize how much im gonna miss them till now and im heart-broken
crowen gave me a hope then broke my heart again again, but they’re my fav . always will be!
I thought it was boring too. I want Yang to be with Owen but Shonda should have had him break up with the random doctor by telling her he is still in love with Yang-that would have been more honest and made more sense.
He would never tell her the all truth, he’s a liar a coward and a cheater.
