Season 3, Episode 13:

Taking A Break From All Your Worries

Having been imprisoned in the brig after the destruction of the algae planet, Baltar stages a hunger strike to protest his situation. He begins tearing strips of fabric from his bed, and after some remarks from HeadSix, he begins to tie the strips into a noose.

Meanwhile, Gaeta attempts to visit Baltar's cell, but is stopped by a guard. Gaeta states that he has presidential authorization to visit, but the guard isn't fooled, and sends him away.

Baltar completes the noose, ties it to the top of his cell and begins to hang himself. As HeadSix tells him to relax, he sees himself waking up in a rebirthing chamber with other copies of Six. Unfortunately, the copies of Six tell him that he is not a Cylon, and that he is going to die instead. Baltar freaks out as the Sixes push him into the tank, while Gaeta and a Marine who arrived at the cell sees what is happening and cuts Baltar down.

In a meeting afterwards, Bill, Roslin, Tigh and Cottle discuss the situation—Baltar is not responding to their attempts to coerce information out of him, and they suggest trying something else.

Tyrol is working on the hangar deck when Lee surprises him by revealing that he and other crew members have built a bar where the crewmen can go to relax while off-duty. Tyrol is very happy, and tells Lee that it will be a relief after a fight he just had with Cally.

Kara and Anders are in bed together when the latter asks if she loves Lee. She mockingly calls herself a two-timing bitch in response, but Anders tells her that she should listen to how she feels, and leaves her to her thoughts. Elsewhere, Lee arrives at his quarters drunk, and Dualla tries to have a conversation with him before he passes out.

Roslin visits Baltar's cell and hands him back his glasses in a moment of sympathy, then tries to get him to talk about his experiences on the Basestar. Baltar sees through her question and accuses her of rehashing lies, causing Roslin to scream at him in frustration. She orders him to be Thrown Out the Airlock, but when he's being dragged away, he recognizes a photo she's displayed as a personal friend who he knew on Caprica, and had no connection to the Cylons. Baltar says that he would never have done anything to hurt his friend, and realizes that Roslin's threat was a trick.

Another meeting is held, and Roslin admits that her plan was a failure. Bill suggests using a special drug to compel Baltar to talk.

In Lee's quarters, he has an argument with Dualla about their marriage and Kara's involvement. Dualla admits that their marriage has failed, and that if Lee is so set on being with Kara, she won't stand in their way. Afterwards, Kara confronts Lee and asks if he loves her, and tells him to think on it before giving her an answer.

Lee goes to the bar and drinks while mulling over his decision. Tyrol visits, and Lee asks if the chief would have been happier with Boomer if they still had a relationship. Tyrol replies in the negative. Lee goes back to Dualla and admits that he needs her more than he realizes, and says that he has always loved her. He looks at Kara across the bar, then breaks off his gaze.

In Galactica's medbay, Baltar is wheeled in and given the experimental drug. He finds himself floating in water and being questioned by unseen figures, who are Roslin and Bill. They ask him various questions, and he answers that he's not a Cylon, and mentions the Final Five and how he was unintentionally involved in the attack on the Colonies. His vital signs begin to drop, and Cottle calls off the interrogation.

Bill and Roslin decide to use Gaeta (whom Baltar still trusts). Gaeta shows Baltar a series of jump calculations, pretending that he needs Baltar to correct his work. However, a still-dazed Baltar realizes that something is wrong, and discovers the camera installed in his cell. He begins to antagonize Gaeta, decrying him as the real traitor of New Caprica. Baltar grabs Gaeta and whispers something in his ear, and Gaeta stabs Balter in the neck with a pen before being punched out by Bill; Baltar is not seriously injured.

Later in Bill's quarters, he and Roslin discuss the repeated failed attempts at getting Baltar to talk. While Bill suggests that they could make Baltar disappear for good, Roslin reminds him of his humanity and says that there's another option—hold a trial.

At Caprica-Six's cell, Roslin visits and asks how she is holding up. The latter says that she's answered all of the fleet's questions, and Roslin responds that they have no intentions of killing her. She asks if Caprica-Six would be willing to give information on Baltar in exchange for the promise of holding a fair trial…

Tropes:

• Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Played with. Dualla says that she won't stand in Lee's way if he wants to dissolve their marriage and begin a relationship with Kara, and Kara asks him if he'll still divorce Dee if she divorces Sam, but Lee admits at the end of the episode that he really does love Dualla.
• Breather Episode: Subverted. Having been mandated by the network, the episode tries to be lighter and more relaxed than the previous action-heavy episodes, but the subject matter and Baltar's interrogation cast a pall over the proceedings.
• Chewing the Scenery: Roslin devolves into overwrought hysterics while speaking with Baltar in the brig, which is possibly what tips him off that she's bluffing about airlocking him.
• Continuity Nod:
  • Kara brings up how Lee said he loved her a year earlier.
  • In The Stinger, when Roslin tries to promise Caprica-Six that she won't be executed, the latter mentions that Roslin made the same promise to Leoben once and broke it.
• Drowning My Sorrows: Lee and the Chief, in the newly-opened Jojo's. Both appear to be in trouble with their wives, although Lee's is more serious.
  Tyrol: To marriage! Why they build bars.
• Enhanced Interrogation Techniques: Bill and Roslin use these against Baltar to make him confess. They appear to be using sleep deprivation at the start of the episode, and simulated execution is used later followed by drugs. A guard in the background looks disturbed by the drugging, and Doc Cottle calls a halt when the drugs seem to be endangering Baltar's life.
• Good Cop/Bad Cop: Bill and Roslin try this on Baltar during his interrogation, but it doesn't work.
• Interrupted Suicide: Baltar tries to hang himself before he's discovered and resuscitated by Marines.
• Ironic Episode Title: The title is supposed to reflect the opening of the bar and the characters taking a break after the action of the last few episodes. Then there's Baltar's torture, where he is forced to stay awake, subjected to psychotropic drugs and stresses over whether he's a Cylon or not.
• Ironic Echo: Roslin hands Baltar's glasses back to him in the brig, just as he did for her when she was in detention in "Precipice".
• Ironic Nursery Tune: The episode begins with Baltar and HeadSix singing one.
• Lost Wedding Ring: Lee loses his while drunk and trashes a hallway trying to find it.
• Never My Fault: Bill realises Baltar will never confess, as he sees himself as the victim.
• Shout-Out: The episode title quotes the theme song to Cheers (which also focuses on a bar).
• Spotting the Thread: While questioning Baltar in his cell, Gaeta keeps looking at the ceiling, where a small camera has been placed. Baltar spots it fairly quickly when he notices.
• Thrown Out the Airlock: Subverted - Roslin uses it as a threat to make Baltar talk, but never had any plans on going through with it.
• Will They or Won't They?: Lee and Kara. They don't.
