"Silent Night" is the 12th episode of Season 3, and the 59th overall. It originally aired December 13, 2006.

Synopsis:

A young woman, who is deaf, is shot in the home she shares with her parents and her infant daughter, all of whom are deaf as well. The stabbing death of a figure skater is also investigated. More of Lindsay's past is revealed. Peyton calls Mac out for not telling the team the two of them are involved.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Close to Home: The first victim reminds Lindsay so much of the tragedy from her own past that she deserts the crime scene, which leads to a dressing down from Stella.
  • Deafness in Media: The first victim, her parents, her baby and her boyfriend are all deaf. An officer who knows American Sign Language is brought in to interpret between them and the team members investigating the young woman's death.
  • Did I Mention It's Christmas?: The outside of the first victim's house is shown decorated for Christmas. The ep bookends with a grandmother giving her infant granddaughter a snow globe. It's implied, but never stated, that it's her Christmas gift. These are the only "mentions" of the holiday.
  • Heroic BSoD: Lindsay's PTSD, likely growing over the previous few months due to a number of cases involving teen girls as well as the upcoming court case, gets triggered by the latest crime scene and the victim's body. Even she doesn't understand why it hits her so hard so fast.
