- Blatant Lies:
- Hotchner telling his wife that this is his last ever BAU case and that he'll definitely take the nine-to-five position afterwards. The thing is he's not lying to her as much as he is himself, which she clearly realizes.
- Played with during the hushed conversation between Hotch and JJ. It's not clear if JJ actually ordered Garcia to give the file to Hotch, or if Garcia was acting off her own steam, but AJ Cook's flat delivery seems to indicate the former.Hotch: Thank you, by the way, for giving Garcia the file to give to me.
JJ: I have no idea what you're talking about. I didn't see Garcia before I left.
- Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Implied by Joe's statement at the end, that he didn't even tell David to bring him the latest victim.
- Children Forced to Kill: Joe tries to make David murder Prentiss. Fortunately, it doesn't happen.
- Dwindling Party: Morgan mentions this in regard to losing three of the BAU.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Though he'd been urging David to shoot someone moments before, actually seeing his son surrounded by people with guns pointed at him breaks through Joe's psychosis enough to tell him to stand down and listen to Hotch.
- Obstructive Bureaucrat: Erin Strauss is one for a vast majority of the episode. Her experiences in the field don't entirely break her of this, but she does come to see the BAU team in its current state as necessary.
- School Nurse: The Hostage of the Week is this.
- Straw Misogynist: Joe hates women because his wife left him, and he tries to show his son that all of them will leave him eventually.
- Wet Blanket Wife: Reluctantly, Haley goes at this in full force when Hotch says that he has to go back and help his team despite being suspended.
- Would Hurt a Child: Joe physically abuses David.
