With her wedding day fast approaching, Lily, along with Barney and Robin, crashes a high school prom to scope out a potential band for the reception.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: By this point, Ted and Robin's friendship was still strained after "Nothing Good Ever Happens After 2 A. M."
  • Buffy Speak: Ted notes that Robin was mad at him for exaggerating his "not-having-a-girlfriend-ness".
  • Complexity Addiction: Barney relies on a scheme to get into the dance, while Marshall and Ted just walk in the back door.
  • Cutting the Knot: Barney spends a good chunk of the episode trying to sneak into the high school... while Ted and Marshall got in through the back.
  • Event Title: The title refers to the high school prom where the gang go to towards the end.
  • Experimented in College: Discussed. Lily regrets not doing a lot of new experiences before marrying Marshall, including trying to have a lesbian experience. Robin fixes this by kissing Lily.
  • Foreshadowing: Lily starts freaking out about the wedding. The episode ends with a lingering shot on her looking very conflicted.
  • High-School Dance: The main setting of the episode. Accordingly, Lily and Robin sneak into a High School Prom because Lily wants to hear the band for the wedding. Robin says she never had a Prom, Lily remembers how and why she broke up with Scooter on the Prom and then regrets not fulfilling all the things she said to want.
  • Lesbian Jock: Referenced. Barney and Lily tease Robin for having played field hockey in junior high by implying that this makes her a lesbian.
  • Mascot: Barney makes use of the school mascot to his advantage.
  • The Rival: It is implied that Marshall and Lily constantly compete with the couple at the beginning of the episode in almost any couple-related events.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Robin's date moves out of view right before he throws up on her dress.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Played for Laughs when Ted tackled the teenage boy who hits Marshall with a nunchaku.
