When an annoying habit in Ted's new girlfriend is pointed out, the gang begins to turn on each other, pointing out bad habits in each of them that none of the others had noticed before.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accentuate the Negative: The premise of the episode is that once someone's annoying habits are pointed out, those habits become the only thing everyone else notices about them.
  • An Aesop: In the middle of a big fight between the gang once all their flaws are pointed out, Mashall remembers his password and finds out that he passed his exam, which instantaneously erases the whole discussion and the five of them go to celebrate. Future!Ted then tells his kids and the audience that while everyone has an annoying habit, people who love you will eventually let go of all this.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!:
    • One of the many flaws Barney has that the others point out. Barney didn't pay attention at all.
    • Cathy, being a Motor Mouth, usually deviates from the actual question, which makes all her blabber even longer.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: Marshall is accused of singing to narrate everything he does; it turns out that one such song, which sounded like nonsense to the group, was a mnemonic device for the password to his bar exam results. This also doubles as a subtle Continuity Nod, since Marshall has been doing this since season one.
  • Compressed Vice: Lily's loud chewing was never referenced before this episode, and is never mentioned again. This contrasts with almost all the other flaws discussed in the episode, which do come up in other episodes, particularly Marshall singing everything he does, Ted pretentiously correcting people, and Barney's Catchphrases and annoying falsetto.
  • Continuity Nod: Ted again shows his knowledge of Sign Language when congratulating Cathy's fiancé. He was shown doing Sign Language in "How I Met Everyone Else".
  • Foreshadowing: Cathy is shown talking in the scenes Future Ted is narrating at the beginning of the episode.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Future Ted complains to his kids about how Cathy never stopped talking, adding, "Can you imagine how awful that is?" Cue eye-roll from the kids, who have had to put up with their father's long-winded storytelling for a long time by now.
  • Motor Mouth: Cathy's main flaw is that she does not shut up, even after asking someone a question.
  • Odd Couple: Ted comes across Cathy a year later, engaged to a deaf man.
  • Oh, Crap!: This happens every time someone has an annoying quirk from others pointed out to them, accompanied by a broken glass sound.
  • Punny Name: Cathy's name comes from "Chatty Cathy".
  • Shout-Out:
    • Ted calls Lily Chewbacca because she chews her food loudly, a reference to the Star Wars character.
    • As mentioned in Punny Name, Cathy's name and her flaw of excessive talking is a reference to the phrase and toy Chatty Cathy.
    • The name of the girl Barney seduces in Rio probably is a reference to José de Alencar's novel "Lucíola", about the deficient morality in Rio de Janeiro in the XIX Century.
