Ted starts his own architectural firm in his apartment and hires an intern to get it off the ground, but is uncomfortable when the intern and Robin start having sex. Meanwhile, Marshall tries to make himself known at work by being the "sports guy".

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bathroom Control: Played for Laughs. Ted's new secretary PJ is given the key to the bathroom (basically, Robin's own) and prevents Robin from using it without his permission. Robin finds this sexy and the two begin sleeping with each other. When Ted fires his secretary and he loses control of the bathroom key, Robin loses interest.
  • Casual Kink: Barney, not knowing PJ is a guy, sent him a card and "a garment that he should not wear for three days and then mail back to me".
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Barney tells Lily a joke so offensive she storms out of the McLaren's and according to Future!Ted, was so offended that she didn't hang out with the gang for few weeks. The joke in question is not shown, because Future!Ted is not going to tell his kids anything that dirty. note
  • Gratuitous Ninja: One shows up in The Stinger after Food Guy and Toy Guy pass by in the hallway. He's not an employee and apparently, "We should leave the building. This has happened before."
  • Meadow Run: Barney says he fantasizes about him and Robin doing this, with himself in a suede vest.
  • Noodle Incident: At the end of the episode, Barney and Marshall are in the conference room and spy a ninja lurking outside the glass wall. Barney becomes visibly alarmed, claiming that "He doesn't work here" and that they should leave the building, adding "This has happened before."
  • Overly Long Gag: Defied; Barney, wanting to avoid an uncomfortable discussion, claims being in love with someone, but saying "wait for it" after every word. Marshall eventually interrupts and says, "I know that you're in love with Robin!".
  • Power Dynamics Kink: Ted's new secretary is given the key to the bathroom and prevents Robin from using it without his permission, but Robin finds this sexy, and the two begin sleeping with each other. When Ted fires his secretary and he loses control of the bathroom key, Robin loses interest.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Barney uses "wait for it" to punctuate his declaration of love for Robin to Marshall.
Barney: I'm [wait for it] in [wait for it] love [wait for it] with [wait for it] [Beat] [Beat] a [wait for it]
Marshall: I KNOW YOU'RE IN LOVE WITH ROBIN.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Lily avoiding the group for several weeks following Barney's dirty joke was scripted to coincide with Alyson Hannigan's maternity leave.
  • Ridiculous Procrastinator: During the entire episode, Ted is finding a lot of excuses to not call any potential clients, even to the point he hires an assistant he doesn't need.
  • Right-Hand Hottie: Ted hires a new secretary, and Robin starts sleeping with him both because he's handsome and because she is turned on by the control of him keeping the bathroom key to the apartment from her.
  • Secret-Keeper: Lily's absence results in Marshall being the only one still in the gang who explicitly knows Barney is in love with Robin (while Ted hasn't revealed that he found out on his own).
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Ted quits his job after wasting months doing nothing, having been fired (unknowingly) by GNB, and starts his own firm... and goes nowhere.
  • Ultimate Job Security: Barney and Marshall work on providing Marshall with this. Food Guy, Toy Guy, etc. all have security because they're that guy. Marshall lands on being Sports Guy (running a fantasy baseball league). Barney already has this because, heh. Please.
