Marshall tries to keep Lily from fighting with him by having sex with her until she falls asleep. Robin and Ted take advantage of Barney's latest state of drunkenness, which renders him unable to lie.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: During Marshall and Lily's fight, Marshall, after bringing up how Lily left him and went to San Francisco, asks "Are me, and Marvin, and any other kids we might have just some consolation prize?" Lily can't bring herself to respond, and storms out in tears.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Barney starts telling a story about himself and a French male model, it seems that he is telling about a gay experience he had, before it turning out that it's just the first time he shared a cab with someone.
    • In a non-humorous example, not only do Marshall and Lily hit unpause on Rome and the Judgeship, but Marshall unpauses San Francisco as well.
    • When asked why he would expose the company's shady dealings, Barney says "Oh, gosh, countless moral reasons... could have applied, but this is pretty much revenge for stealing my girlfriend."
  • Best Served Cold: Barney spends over a decade reinventing himself, gaining the trust of his boss, building a career and cooperating with federal agents, just to get back at the man for stealing his girlfriend.
  • Call-Back: Ted recalls that nothing good happens at 2 AM, the hour where Marshall and Lily had a fight. It is finally defied when Luke is born four years after that at 2 AM.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Ted's turtle plushie given to him by his mother during his homesick college years. It becomes important when Marshall steps on it after he puts Lily to sleep.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Barney still feels the slap that Marshall gave to him an hour ago.
    • To the San Francisco fight, all the way back in Come On.
  • Distracted by the Sexy:
    • Defied. Lily tells Marshall he's not allowed to distract her with his calves while they have their fight.
    • Marshall's entire plan is predicated on ensuring that coitus with Lily lasts until she is too exhausted to resume fighting about his accepting the judgeship behind her back.
  • In Vino Veritas: Barney has several levels of being drunk. When he becomes really drunk, way after the Jabba-level drunk, he becomes drunk to the point of telling the most honest truth.
  • Raging Stiffie: A last resort tactic using Barney's performance-enhancing drugs. It's also implied that it's still erect during the argument.
Marshall: (Thinking Out Loud) You did it. you banged your wife to sleep. Nice job, (looks down) Still- Big Fudge.
  • The Reveal:
    • The names of Ted's kids are revealed to be Penny and Luke. Penny presumably comes from both Ted and the mother's love for coins, while Luke is consistent with Ted's previous vow of naming one of his children after Luke Skywalker.
    • Barney being honest-level drunk brings several revelations:
      • Barney spends one crapload a year for his suits (of his 16 crapload salary).
      • Virginia kicking Barney out before they moved to second base.
      • Barney's "heh, please," job was actually an acronym for Provide Legal Exculptation And Sign Everything. Basically, Barney works as a Fall Guy and an informant to the federal agents.
      • Robin's family has 6000 craploads worth of money.
  • Think Unsexy Thoughts: One tactic for Marshall not to climax easily in order to put Lily to sleep. It goes too well though, so he thinks of something slightly sexy.
    Bugs with boobs.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Robin, whose family has around 6000 craploads. Ted uses this to pay all the expenses from the rounds of the very expensive Glen McKenna to her account.
  • Undisclosed Funds: Future Ted refuses to tell his children how much Barney spends on suits (1 crapload annually), what his starting salary was (16 craploads annually), or how much Robin's family is worth (6,000 craploads). Instead, he refers to them in units of "craploads".
  • Wham Line:
(Marshall sneaks out, steps on Ted's plushie)
Ted's turtle plushie: I love you, Mommy.
    Lily: (waking up) Unpause!
    • When Marshall and Lily do have their fight, and Lily states what Marshall did was more selfish than anything she had ever done, Marshall goes for the throat.
