Recap / The Americans S 2 E 4 A Little Night Music

Go To

Elizabeth and Philip are assigned to kidnap Anton Baklanov (Michael Aronov), a Jewish Soviet scientist who defected to America. When Philip finds out Baklanov has a mistress, they plan to take him when he leaves. However, Baklanov has two Mossad agents shadowing him, and they try to stop Elizabeth and Philip. Elizabeth manages to subdue one of them, but the other, despite being badly beaten by Philip, manages to drive off with Baklanov, leaving Elizabeth and Philip stranded with the other Mossad agent, and with the police looking for them.

Claudia returns, asking Elizabeth and Philip to find out who killed Emmett and Leanne. She gives them the name of a suspect - Andrew Larrick, a gay Navy officer Emmett and Leanne were blackmailing - and also tells them about Brad Mullin (Jefferson White), a naval recruit. Elizabeth, pretending to be a woman raped by Larrick, convinces Brad to copy Larrick's files for her. However, it seems as if Elizabeth hasn't quite recovered from getting shot, and may not be as into the mission as she thinks.

Paige meets up again with Kelli, who introduces her to a youth group at Reed Street Church, and Elizabeth gets upset when she finds out, especially when Paige initially lies to her about it.

Elsewhere, Martha and "Clark" have an argument (so he can leave early), and Martha leaves several messages on his answering machine about how lonely she is and how she wants to admit to the world, and her bosses, that she's married.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Ambiguous Situation: When Elizabeth, under her cover identity, pulls away from having sex with Mullin in order to manipulate him into copying Larrick's files, it's unclear whether she's doing this as part of her character, or if she's really starting to become gun-shy in the field.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Elizabeth and Philip conversation about Paige joining a church sounds like many other parents' conversations about their children when they don't like the way they've changed.
  • A Father to His Men: A Gender Flipped version; Claudia worries about whether Elizabeth is ready to get back into the game, and when Elizabeth points out Claudia is worried about something else, Claudia replies simply, "I don't want to lose you."
  • Hypocrite: Again, Elizabeth and Philip wondering how much Paige is lying to them, considering what they've lied to her about up to this point.
  • Instant Sedation: Philip chloroforms Baklanov in order to subdue him.
  • It's Personal: Claudia convinces Elizabeth and Philip that trying to find Emmett and Leanne's murderer should be this to them.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After Elizabeth is able to subdue the Mossad agent who attacked her, she gives one of these to him, taking out her anger over being raped and being shot. Unfortunately for her, this distracts Philip enough to allow the other Mossad agent to take off with Baklanov.
  • Shout-Out: Modern English's "I Melt with You" plays during the scene where Philip sees Baklanov calling his mistress.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Kelli doesn't appear again after this episode, but she's the one who introduces Paige to church, which becomes a big part of Paige's life for the next couple of seasons.
  • Titled Afterthe Song: The episode title is the English translation of "Eine Klein Nachtmusik" by Mozart, one of the most famous pieces of classical music ever written (it's what Elizabeth and Mullin listen to in the listening station at the record store).
  • Two-Part Episode: The story of the attempted kidnapping of Baklanov continues in "The Deal".
