Made To Suffer

There's no turning back for Rick's group or The Governor after a daring raid on Woodbury.

A group of five survivors - Tyreese, his sister Sasha, and three members of a family - are fighting their way through a forest. After pausing for a moment to catch their breath, the leader, Tyreese, realizes that one of their members, Donna, was bit. Tyreese decides to bring her with them until she turns, to spare her son Ben and husband Allen the pain of having to put her down right there. The group makes their way through the forest and comes upon the partially destroyed section of a building and enters it, while the camera pans out to show that the crumbling building is part of the prison...

In Woodbury, The Governor expresses joy that Andrea is enjoying her time in Woodbury. Later, after Andrea's asleep, The Governor goes to his secret room and brings Penny out. He tries to sing a song for her, and then realizes she's more concerned with trying to get at a bucket of meat nearby. Frustrated, The Governor puts Penny back in her room.

Elsewhere, Glenn and Maggie are talking about their experience. Maggie assures Glenn that The Governor did not rape her, and they decide to stage an escape attempt by using the bones of the walker Glenn killed in the previous episode as weapons. Outside the Woodbury perimeter, the rescue group scouts the perimeter and tries to look for a way in. Michonne mysteriously vanishes, but soon returns and tells them she knows how to get in.

The Governor goes to Merle and tells him he wants to attack the prison, while also assuring him that nothing will happen to Daryl. He then orders Merle to take Glenn and Maggie to the pit of walkers outside town. Merle and his men go to collect the duo, only for Maggie to kill one of the soldiers with the improvised weapon. They are taken back into restraints before they can do anything else.

The rescue group enters through a shop, and then takes one of the Woodbury soldiers’ hostage. After they find out what he knows, they knock him out just before heading to the warehouse where Glenn and Maggie are being held. Inside, they throw several smoke grenades at the group escorting the duo, and rescue both of them while exchanging gunfire with the soldiers.

Realizing that someone is invading the town, The Governor orders all of the residents inside, and tells his men to kill the intruders. Nearby, the rescue group recoups and takes stock of their situation. Glenn indicates that Merle is alive and was trying to kill them, while Daryl wants to find Merle. Rick tells him that is not an option, and that they have to leave immediately. The rescue group moves back outside and heads towards the perimeter, exchanging gunfire with The Governor's men amid the smoke. Meanwhile, Michonne breaks off from the group and goes to find The Governor.

On the main street, Andrea watches the confusion, and The Governor tells her to make sure the residents are safe. Andrea offers to fight, but The Governor ignores her. She disobeys him anyway and shoots at several fleeing figures, catching a glimpse of Oscar in the process and realizing they are escaped convicts.

Rick is continuing to lay down cover fire while the group climbs up and over a school bus. Suddenly, he has a hallucination of Shane walking down the street firing a shotgun. Oscar is killed due to Rick's inaction, and when Rick fires on and kills "Shane", he realizes it was actually a Woodbury soldier. Maggie tells Rick they have to go and heads over the bus, while Daryl tells Rick he will provide cover fire as the latter escapes.

Inside the prison, Carl hears screaming coming from an adjacent wing, and heads out by himself to investigate. He discovers Tyreese's group fighting walkers, and tells them to follow him back to Cell Block C. He brings them into the common room outside the block and tells them to finish off the rapidly fading Donna. Tyreese says he will handle, and thanks Carl for what he did.

Michonne enters The Governor's apartment and finds his secret room, where she stares in shock at the fishtank full of still-moving walker heads. She then hears a noise, and opens a nearby door to discover Penny. As she takes off Penny's hood, she realizes it is a walker and moves to kill her, when The Governor barges in and pleads with her not to hurt his daughter.Michonne kills Penny anyway, and The Governor attacks her. In the ensuing fight, Michonne manages to grab a piece of glass after breaking the fish tank, and uses it to stab The Governor in the eye. As she prepares to kill him, Andrea runs in and draws her weapon, telling Michonne to stop. The two circle each other, weapons drawn, until Michonne walks off. Andrea is stunned to see the decapitated walker heads, while The Governor cries over his daughter's body.

A short time later, the town's doctor bandages The Governor's eye, as he ignores Andrea's questions about Penny and what happened with Michonne. Merle and Milton come to visit, and The Governor glares at Merle for his failure to kill Michonne.

Outside the town, the rescue group rejoins with Michonne just before realizing that Daryl has not made it back. Rick threatens to kill Michonne for running off, but she explains that he still needs her help.

The Governor assembles the townspeople in the arena, and tells them that a group of "terrorists" assaulted the town. He then blames Merle for allowing Michonne to leave and let their town be compromised, before revealing that Daryl has also been captured. As Andrea watches in shock, the crowd shouts for The Governor to kill them...

Tropes:

  • Abled in the Adaptation: While The Governor still loses an eye to Michonne, he still has both his arms, unlike his comic counterpart who lost an arm in Michonne's torture.
  • Adapted Out: Allen and Donna have only one son, Ben, with no sign of Billy.
  • Badass in Distress: Daryl after he's captured by The Governor's men.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Rick's group finds and rescues Glenn and Maggie as they're being led out of the warehouse in Woodbury.
    • Carl shows up to rescue Tyreese's group as they're trying to fight a horde in the prison's boiler room.
  • Big "NO!": The Governor, when Michonne kills Penny.
  • Black Dude Dies First: Oscar is the only member of Rick's group to die during the assault on Woodbury.
  • The Cameo: Jon Bernthal as Shane, who appears as a hallucination to Rick.
  • Concealment Equals Cover: Those park benches in Woodbury make crappy concealment and even crappier cover, but they work well enough for our heroes.
  • Create Your Own Villain: While The Governor was certainly ruthless and evil before, he goes off the deep end when Michonne slays his undead daughter.
  • Cry for the Devil: The Governor is a twisted bastard, but it's hard not to feel sympathetic as he weeps over Penny.
  • Death by Adaptation: Played with in regards to "death" when it comes to zombies, but Penny remains as a free Undead Child in the comics whereas Michonne puts her down here.
  • Eye Scream: The Governor.
  • Gorn: There's really nothing pretty about the fight between Michonne and the Governor.
  • Jailbait Taboo: Before Carol puts a stop to it, Axel looks ready to try and hit on Beth after learning she's 17 (16 is the age of consent in Georgia). He explains to Carol that he hasn't been around women in a long time. He can't go for Maggie since she's already with Glenn, and thinks Carol's lesbian, and thus Beth was his only option. When he learns otherwise about Carol, he immediately jumps to flirting with her.
  • Meaningful Background Event: Before Daryl is revealed in the arena, Shumpert can be seen holding Daryl's crossbow.
  • Mexican Standoff: A variation - Michonne and Andrea have their weapons drawn at each other (a sword and a pistol, respectively) and circle each other. However, neither of them have any true interest in killing each other since they were friends, and Michonne walks away from the standoff.
  • Oh, Crap!: Merle when he realizes The Governor has discovered that Michonne is not dead, and again when The Governor reveals that Daryl was captured.
  • Pet the Dog: The Governor crying over Penny's dead body.
  • Rescue Arc: Although Rick and company succeed in rescuing Glenn and Maggie, Daryl is captured which necessitates another one.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Michonne gets her revenge on The Governor by killing Penny.
  • Sanity Slippage: Rick has a hallucination that Shane is attacking the group.
  • Shoot the Dog:
    • Carl offers to take care of Donna, but Tyreese says "We take care of our own".
    • It's not enough that Oscar goes down; Maggie has to cap him in the head to keep him there.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Carl, who goes by himself to rescue Tyreese's group. Tyreese later addresses Carl as "the man" when he locks them in for their own protection.
