In December of 1979, Walt Disney Pictures released its live-action science fiction adventure, The Black Hole. Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the film¡¯s release, I could not help but be inspired to create a piece that embodies all the things I love in this wonderfully imagined cosmic epic which I first saw as a kid. It is the story of the crew a small spaceship, the Palomino. They come across a massive long-lost starship that has been missing for decades, the Cygnus. This huge foreboding vessel sits mysteriously still on the doorstep of a massive Black Hole, a cosmic anomaly that is unmatched in its destructive power and may be a doorway to unknown universes. Once onboard, our curious heroes are pitted against one life-threatening dilemma after another, none more dangerous than the ship's deranged captain, bent on taking his ship into the Black Hole and beyond at any cost. His dominating will over the ship's functions and its veiled, robed crew is enforced by the Cygnus¡¯s dangerous chief robot, Maximillian - a red hovering mechanical menace who plays a crucial part in the hair-razing action to come. The Black Hole is a tale of discovery and survival in a stunningly creative story on film that only Disney's imagination could have created. I have chosen to honor its place in my heart by putting together the main metal villain, Maximillian, with some of the unsettling members of his ship's crew on their bridge. There, the order will be soon given to fly into the eye of darkness or light.
