First edition of "perhaps the most revelatory autobiography of high command to exist in any language" (Keegan, p. 202). The first edition was issued in five different bindings at varying costs: this is a nice example of the cloth issue. Written as Grant was dying of throat cancer and mired in dire financial straits, the work serves as a deathbed justification for the war against the Confederacy and for Grant's own conduct as commanding general of the Union Army. The book was published by Mark Twain, Grant's close friend, who marketed it by using military veterans in uniform to raise subscriptions. For James M. McPherson, "To read Personal Memoirs today with knowledge of the circumstances in which Grant wrote them is to understand the indomitable will and moral courage that were keys to his military success" (ANB). John Keegan, The Mask of Command, 1987. Two volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, and with general's insignia blocked in black and gilt, covers with portrait medallic roundel blocked in gilt, front cover lettered in gilt, floral sprigged endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece, etched plate, and folding facsimile to each, 42 full-page plans in the text, folding map at rear of vol. II. Very light bumping and rubbing, faint browning to margins: a near-fine set. Seller Inventory # 166870
