First US edition, first state, this copy in a handsome binding by Bayntun. Set in 1537, this was the first of Twain's historical novels and was inspired by Charlotte Yonge's Little Duke (1854), which Clemens found in his sister-in-law's library at Quarry Farm. "Ostensibly a charming children's story", the book "is in reality even more interesting as a satire for adults" (Fullerton, p. 57). The London and Montreal editions of this work "were issued some days prior to the Boston edition" (BAL). This first state copy has the Franklin Press imprint on the copyright page, and the uncorrected text (which was corrected in the second state) in three places: page 124, line 1, "estate" for "state"; page 263, line 9 up from bottom, "do not" for "do"; and page 362, line 3 up from bottom "reigned" for "reined". BAL 3402; Johnson, p. 39. B. M. Fullerton, Selective Bibliography of American Literature 1775-1900, 1932. Quarto (204 x 161 mm). Finely bound brown morocco by Bayntun c.1980, spine with raised bands, compartments lettered and elaborately tooled in gilt, French fillet to covers, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Facsimile holograph and wood-engraved frontispiece, Franklin Press imprint on verso of title page, numerous text illustrations, chapter vignettes. Facsimile holograph reinserted on stub. A fine copy.
