What do you get when you transplant CBS's successful franchise to the Big Apple? Cases involving sewer rats as witnesses, a victim whose head was slammed in a pizzeria oven, and murders of commodities traders, and--of course--a Red Sox fan. Fun as that may sound, CSI: NY is a bleaker, grimmer version of its Las Vegas and Miami cousins. The team is made up of a pleasantly New Yawk but indistinct cast of characters: Detective Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes), Detective Don Flack (Eddie Cahill), medical examiner Sheldon Hawkes (Hill Harper) and younger CSIs Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo) and Aiden Burn (Vanessa Ferlito, who has since left the show). Their leader, Detective Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise), fares better as one of the few characters in the CSI franchise to have a back story (he lost his wife in the 9/11 attacks). But the formula has always worked best by avoiding personal storylines, thus any mention of this became nearly nonexistent. Sinise may be less intense than Miami's David Caruso, but lacks the wink-wink humor of the original's William Petersen. You kinda wish the whole crew would lighten up a bit, maybe go on a company retreat or something. Nonetheless, the franchise continues its trademark zooming cameras, gruesome crimes and way-cool forensic gadgets. New York makes an intriguing backdrop, but a message for producer Jerry Bruckheimer: We're saturated now. Please don't give us CSI: Omaha next. -- Ellen A. Kim

And like the other CSI entries, I find these characters and their world amazing. I have always viewed television shows from the standpoint of a viewer and not that of someone interested in the mechanics of filmmaking. Each act of every episode kept me on the edge of my seat, not because of the mystery of the story but how the character development, plot and dialogue seem to gel so well. I love the dialogue and denouements and the openings were always spectacular.
The CSI franchise has totally changed the way I view television now. I also own the second season and hope to expand my collection.
She like Mac, and I like Danny... and don't worry, Flack's hair is cut by season two! :P A great start though, and for me, easily better than the following season simply because I felt like this season didn't have half-naked girls in every episode as part of the crime that would take place.
I will recommend this to any one who asks me. It is wonderful to put in since I don't have cable.
Love that amazon has this choice for me to find.
Thanks again.
I also received this on time as well.
I give it a top star rating!

Each of the CSI franchise series has its own sense of identity and its own distinct 'feel' both in terms of the teams and the style of filming and set production. CSI NY has a darker look and feel - literally. Some of the scenes inside CSI HQ are almost Gothic in the way dark areas of shadow surround the areas of highlighted brightness where examinations and tests take place. The whole thing has a more subdued feel than either CSI LV or CSI Miami but the cityscape provides a much broader and varied panorama for dramas to take place.
Gary Sinese as Mac is superb - not the exuberance of Horatio nor the 'other worldiness' of Grissom - far more rooted in the real world with a weariness borne of the after-effects of and the physical proximity to 911. It's true that his team isn't yet as well developed or individualised as those in the other two CSI teams, but the pairing of Mac and Stella is probably the most believable and interesting in the whole CSI franchise.
This is definitely a series to catch if thus far you have only encountered CSI Miami or Las Vegas.
