What do you get when you transplant CBS's successful franchise to the Big Apple? Cases involving sewer rats as witnesses, a victim whose head was slammed in a pizzeria oven, and murders of commodities traders, and--of course--a Red Sox fan. Fun as that may sound, CSI: NY is a bleaker, grimmer version of its Las Vegas and Miami cousins. The team is made up of a pleasantly New Yawk but indistinct cast of characters: Detective Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes), Detective Don Flack (Eddie Cahill), medical examiner Sheldon Hawkes (Hill Harper) and younger CSIs Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo) and Aiden Burn (Vanessa Ferlito, who has since left the show). Their leader, Detective Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise), fares better as one of the few characters in the CSI franchise to have a back story (he lost his wife in the 9/11 attacks). But the formula has always worked best by avoiding personal storylines, thus any mention of this became nearly nonexistent. Sinise may be less intense than Miami's David Caruso, but lacks the wink-wink humor of the original's William Petersen. You kinda wish the whole crew would lighten up a bit, maybe go on a company retreat or something. Nonetheless, the franchise continues its trademark zooming cameras, gruesome crimes and way-cool forensic gadgets. New York makes an intriguing backdrop, but a message for producer Jerry Bruckheimer: We're saturated now. Please don't give us CSI: Omaha next. -- Ellen A. Kim

Excellent show. Great to watch.

Like the other entries in the CSI franchise, I never took the time to catch the regular televised run during their air dates, so I was introduced to these characters and their world on DVD.

And like the other CSI entries, I find these characters and their world amazing. I have always viewed television shows from the standpoint of a viewer and not that of someone interested in the mechanics of filmmaking. Each act of every episode kept me on the edge of my seat, not because of the mystery of the story but how the character development, plot and dialogue seem to gel so well. I love the dialogue and denouements and the openings were always spectacular.

The CSI franchise has totally changed the way I view television now. I also own the second season and hope to expand my collection.

I started out watching CSI Vegas and was immediately hooked. When Miami came out, I just couldn't relate to the characters and had no interest in watching it AT ALL. When NY came out, I wasn't sure....there are three actors that I have always enjoyed in anything they did so I thought that I would enjoy this too. As luck would have it, I was stationed overseas and couldn't watch this CSI with any regularity. I finally broke down and bought the series on DVD and I am only sorry it took me this long to buy it. As good as Vegas but the story lines and everything is different enough so you don't get bored! These are two of the BEST shows on TV right now hands down.

CSI: New York bursts onto the scene starting with an exciting CSI: Miami crossover episode and a quick move into very interesting, albeit horrifying (“Locked-in syndrome”), episodes to set the stage for this new series. The show, which obviously takes place in New York, introduces a new cast of characters which, though are not as witty/funny as those in CSI: Las Vegas, take their work very seriously and provide more than enough personality for viewers to fall in love with. The show comes off as darker than the other CSI shows, sometimes in the stories, but especially with the seemingly gray atmosphere with a heavy focus on blacks and whites…as compared to colorful locations such as Miami or Las Vegas. Definitely a show to watch, you won’t be disappointed.

Bought for hubby for Father's Day. We've gotten so fed up with cable prices, with streaming TV that still has commercials or shows we don't care for, etc., that we now only use an antennae; however, there are older shows we really miss, so we're adding to our TV DVD library. We always enjoyed this CSI spinoff and have enjoyed rewatching. It's been so long that we don't even recall the episodes. Arrived in timely fashion and in great shape.

I had bought this for my wife for Christmas. She had told me that she watched this series religiously when she was in high school and college... For awhile all the cop / forensic dramas all kind of sounded and looked the same to me. However, I was glad I got this for her for Christmas, because we quickly started buying up the following seasons.

She like Mac, and I like Danny... and don't worry, Flack's hair is cut by season two! :P A great start though, and for me, easily better than the following season simply because I felt like this season didn't have half-naked girls in every episode as part of the crime that would take place.

I loved watching this. It is my favorite csi series. Can't wait to get the next one when I can afford it.
I will recommend this to any one who asks me. It is wonderful to put in since I don't have cable.
Love that amazon has this choice for me to find.
Thanks again.
I also received this on time as well.
I give it a top star rating!

5.0 out of 5 stars In den Abgründen des "Big Apple"
Reviewed in Germany on September 11, 2015

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily as good as the other CSI's
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 4, 2007
This is a duplicate of my review for the Region 2 edition of Season 1
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Each of the CSI franchise series has its own sense of identity and its own distinct 'feel' both in terms of the teams and the style of filming and set production. CSI NY has a darker look and feel - literally. Some of the scenes inside CSI HQ are almost Gothic in the way dark areas of shadow surround the areas of highlighted brightness where examinations and tests take place. The whole thing has a more subdued feel than either CSI LV or CSI Miami but the cityscape provides a much broader and varied panorama for dramas to take place.

Gary Sinese as Mac is superb - not the exuberance of Horatio nor the 'other worldiness' of Grissom - far more rooted in the real world with a weariness borne of the after-effects of and the physical proximity to 911. It's true that his team isn't yet as well developed or individualised as those in the other two CSI teams, but the pairing of Mac and Stella is probably the most believable and interesting in the whole CSI franchise.

This is definitely a series to catch if thus far you have only encountered CSI Miami or Las Vegas.
