Few shows bottle pure delight like Glee, a Fox TV series about the ups and downs of a high school glee club, or show choir. The show lures you in with its musical numbers, a mix of classic rock and Broadway show tunes performed by a cast of marvelous singers and dancers--but what keeps you watching are the wonderful characters, ranging from Rachel (Lea Michelle), whose self-obsession is as uninhibited as it is annoying; to Emma (Jayma Mays), a germ-phobic guidance counselor hopelessly in love with a married teacher; to Kurt (Chris Colfer), a cherubic young gay man who discovers he's got a fantastic football kick. The center of the show is Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), the earnest Spanish teacher of McKinley High School, who's determined to guide the glee club to victory at a national competition. He sees this collection of overemotional misfits as heroic, but they're looked down on as losers by the rest of the school--especially Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Best In Show), the ruthless cheerleading coach who will stop at nothing to destroy the glee club before they can take even a fraction of her extravagant budget.

Glee fuses adolescent soap opera, the comic pettiness of academic politics, and exuberant song and dance. (While it would be better if the songs weren't so glossily produced, it's impossible to deny the pep and talent of these young performers.) Somehow, the characters manage to be cartoonish yet multidimensional; even the nicest characters are capable of being jerks and the most manipulative have moments of sympathy or grace. For example, Will's wife, Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig), fakes a pregnancy because she's afraid Will is about to leave her for Emma--but as absurd as this scenario is, it's carefully grounded in enough moments of desperate yearning that it becomes completely compelling… particularly when Terri seizes on the unwanted pregnancy of lead cheerleader Quinn (Dianna Agron) as the solution to her problem. Throw in vividly colored costume designs and blisteringly funny rants from Sue, and it's easy to see why Glee became an unexpected hit. Volume One: The Road to Sectionals collects the first 13 episodes, along with a smattering of extras that range from charming (the principal leads the audience on a tour through the school) to inane (bland factoids about the actors' favorite colors). --Bret Fetzer

I am a new fan of Glee, having caught my first episode on December 23rd. I've seen 4 episodes through DVR, and I caught the last 5 episodes on Hulu, but that means I am missing 4 episodes!! I haven't seen 1, 2, 3, or 8.

Yes I could sit there and have my DVR record the episodes and hope that eventually the powers that be will cycle through the show again (in fact, I am fairly confident Episode 8 will air this week), but that completely misses the point about how utterly FANTASTIC this show is and how I will absolutely DIE if I don't see episodes 1, 2, and 3 as soon as it is humanly possible.

So. While on the one hand I am peeved that I will end up purchasing these DVDs twice (since I will get the complete season as soon as it is available), on the other hand I am insanely grateful that the DVDs are available for purchase now so that I don't have to WAIT an undetermined amount of time to see the early episodes.

Okay. About Glee. I just wasn't interested since I figured it was a show targeted for teens and would therefore be completely boring to me. But I know people who love it, and I always like to check out popular culture stuff, (albeit grudgingly), so I recorded an episode and it just blew me away.

The show is a bit of a spoof and situations/characters tend to be a bit stereotypical and extreme (Sue, the maniacal cheerleading coach is HILARIOUS), and there are a few dramatic situations that were right out of Desperate Housewives (a faked pregnancy for starters), but this show reveals the vulnerable, human side of its characters in such a beautifully honest way that I just fell in love with it. For example, Quinn, the gorgeous and vicious cheerleader, has an incredible, poignant story line involving teen pregnancy and given how much I loathed her initially, I just can't believe how much I've grown to care about her and what happens to her.

I will say that the show is pretty edgy in terms of subject matter, and some of the dancing (I'm thinking of the bootyliscious dance) is suggestive, but I allow my 11 and 12 1/2 year old children watch it with me because I think the positive values Glee promotes outweighs some of the other more confusing (to my kids anyway) choices that the characters have made, and it has launched many great conversations about honesty and deceit and problem solving and winning and losing and acceptance, etc...

Plus the music is great! We all enjoy the performances so much. And many of the songs are very cleverly integrated into the story line.

Definitely my new fave. Highly recommended.

I LOVE the musical numbers in this show, but am TOTALLY disappointed that the two gay characters, a student (Kurt)and a teacher (Sandy) are portrayed as over-the-top stereotypes. What a shame that in this day and age, the writers/producers did not take the opportunity to present gays as the "normal" people they are instead of perpetuating the age-old stereotypes of gay males as as effeminate as "Kurt," and as vile as the molesting teacher, "Sandy." Contrary to the stereotypes perpetuated on "Glee," the MAJORITY of gay males do NOT want to be girls, do not dress like girls, do not wear make-up, do not sashay around; likewise, the MAJORITY of gay male teachers do NOT go around trying to get into their male students' pants. In the real world, the MAJORITY of gay males are as "normal" as "Finn" and "Mr. Schue." Lines like those recited by Kurt's father: "I knew you were gay because on your third birthday all you wanted was a pair of sensible heels," are totally off-base. C'mon Glee, I know you're on the Fox Network, but get real!

GLEE is more than just a musical comedy about raging, bully teachers or scheming, non-pregnant wives -- it is a show that shows the NEED and WANT of being accepted in society (or in this case: HIGH SCHOOL). Glee Club, aka Show Choir, is not a POPULAR extracurricular activity. That being said, people lash out toward those who are involved, and so forth.

Will Shuester, the new director of Glee Club, creates a sanctuary for those talented students whom he thinks has a chance of taking Nationals. Here's the problem:

(Lea Michele) Rachel Berry is a overzealous star.
(Chris Colfer) Kurt Hummel is a closeted queer.
(Cory Monteith) Finn Hudson is an attractive stud.
(Amber Riley) Mercedes Jones is a dramatic diva.
(Kevin McHale) Artie Abrams is a cripple.
(Jenna Ushkowitz) Tina Chang is a s-s-stutter-girl.

Six kids?! At first, I was surprised at the fact they did not have a lot of students, but by Episode Two [Showmance], I was blown away. Great performances by the evil, vindictive Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and Rachel Berry (Lea Michele). The cast is excellent, and not too silly. Also: Terri Shuester (Jessalyn Gilsig) is phenomenal, as always.

The DVD is kind of a joke to me, but hey, it's a great show. Some reviews mentioned a few more episodes until the end of Season One. Oh well, I just bought it today, ONE DAY SHIPPING. I highly recommend you get slushed by this amazing show.

GLEE, embrace your inner loser.

"Glee" is an amazing show. It can have you laughing, crying, or doing both at the same time. It can be heartwarming at one moment and hilarious at the next. It's a perfect blend of drama and comedy. The characters are lovable (or hate-able in Terri's case!), and the storylines are interesting, and keep evolving instead of staying in the same place for months. It Quickly became my 2nd favorite show (Only behind Lost!). The performances are great, especially from Lea Michele; her performance of "Don't Rain On My Parade" was flawless, and I am actually listening to it on my i-pod right now while I'm writing this review! The cast is very talented. Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, and Jane Lynch got well-deserved golden globe nominations, while the show took one home for best comedy/musical! The show has recently been picked up for a second season before the last nine episodes of the first have even aired! "Glee" is just that great.

If you ever need a bit of cheering up then this will do the trick!
I first heard about Glee from the E Entertainment channel where they talked about it constantly. So when it finally appeared on E4, I couldn't resist a look. I was sucked in straight away. It has everything you could possibly want from a light entertainment/drama series and yet it's different from anything you will have seen before.
The script is clever, witty and sometimes moving. The young cast are great and have some good singing talent. Lea Michelle in particular (Rachel) has an amazing voice and could easily perform in the West End or on Broadway.
The story centres around Mr.Schuester, who agrees to take on the Glee (musical theatre) club and try and win a contest. The Glee club is full of misfits and unpopular kids but for various reasons they are soon joined by cheerleaders and football stars. They are contending with crazy Sue's jealousy and scheming (coach of the award winning cheer squad) tumultuous personal lives (teen pregnancy, disability, coming out, problematic marriages, falling in love with the unattainable.)
While all this is going on, they perform fantastic covers and mash ups of a variety of songs ranging from modern (Kanye West, Rhianna, Carrie Underwood) to older classics (Neil Sedaka, Journey). It's fair to say they some of these performances stand out way above the others and make you want to immediately download them. Rachel's version of "Take a Bow" by Rhianna, the ensemble performance of "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey are two of my favourites but they are all good to be honest.
It's an ensemble cast and although the main characters of Will, Rachel, Sue and Finn dominate, every cast member gets their moment. Watch out for some great guest stars as well (Kristin Chenoweth was very good and ironically a few weeks later the Glee club covered "Defying Gravity" from Wicked as well.)
I can imagine wanting to watch this more than once- it's quality feel-good tv. Bear in mind that this only the first half of the season. There will be a follow up DVD and probably a full box set at a later date.

Sorry to any Gleeks out there, it's just my own opinion and if you like it that's cools, it just didn't speak to me and I couldn't find it very funny. It was actually [painful for me to watch at times, but I paid $.90 for it, it came in like new, still smelt new, no scratches and in perfect condition.... it's just the show itself I give the thumbs down to ):
