No book of the Bible covers the breadth and depth of God’s expose’ of the sin problem and His compassionate solution as does the Book of Isaiah. As E. J. Waggoner points out, the Book of Isaiah presents itself as a court scene in which God arraigns not just Israel before His infallible court—but us! Fortunately, while He precisely presents the indictment of our utter rebellion against His Righteousness, He does not leave us without hope and comfort.

From January, 1899 through June, 1900, E.J. Waggoner published a series of articles in The Present Truth magazine that were later reprinted as this commentary. A review of the literature from that era reveals that these articles were written in the latter stages of the greatest revival of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. During the 1890’s Ellen White repeatedly said the Latter Rain had begun to fall—but by the early 1900’s she lamented that the church was retreating to Egypt. This echoes a critical portion of the message of Isaiah; as God’s people repeatedly resisted God’s call to repentance and promise for full restoration.

The overarching message of The Gospel of Isaiah, by E.J. Waggoner, is this: The Creator is also our Redeemer and the Restorer of all things to perfection. As Creator, Redeemer and Restorer, God Himself asserts His authority to exercise His sovereignty over the world. An acute awareness of God’s righteous sovereignty lies at the center of this commentary. To the careful reader, this exposition of the Book of Isaiah will be seen as an urgent wake-up call to the Body of Christ to repent and prepare to meet thy God!
