I LOVE this series! about a year ago, I started purchasing the DVD's one season at a time. About a month ago, I moved across country. While unpacking, I ran across my DVD's and realized I had not watched them all yet, so I started over from the beginning. Within the month, I had finished Season 8, only to find I didn't have the last season!!!! Not good! I looked all over the area, but it was nowhere to be found. I rushed onto Amazon and purchased it right away! Two days later (Thank you, Prime!) I was sitting in my living room watching the last season of HIMYM.
This review is in two parts, first the physical product itself. The disc arrived brand new and completely sealed. No cracks, scratches, or anything. It worked perfectly, and the case is in pristine condition. Couldn't ask for more!
And now for the content. First I will say, that I HIGHLY recommend this season, and series! Just remember, this is the FINAL season, so if you haven't seen the rest yet, you will lose a lot if you don't start from the beginning!!! WARNING!!! Contains spoilers, don't read any further if you haven't seen the final epic season! This final season was so bittersweet. The writers are amazing, and they so skillfully stretched out one weekend into a full 24 episode season (admittedly, the last 2 episodes which were the 2 part finale only included a few minutes at the beginning that were at the tail end of the weekend). This season wrapped up so many open and loose ends that have been floating around in HIMYM space over the past 8 seasons. We finally learned exactly what it is that Barney does at work (Please). We saw Robin's ever absent mother in the flesh (with a great performance by Tracey Ullman). We see the final conclusion to the infamous Slap Bet (Best. Wedding. Present. EVER). We also get a more detailed history of the illustrious yellow umbrella. We get to see the culmination of everything the show has promised for 9 years, Ted meets, falls in love with, and marries the mysterious mother, and we even get closure with Ted's inability to get over his unresolved feelings for Robin. In short, the series final season was legen....wait for it....dary!
The cover boasts an alternate ending. In my opinion, the alternate ending left a lot to be desired. It really felt as though they just "chopped off the last bit where there is any references to the mothers illness or passing There may have been some minor dialog changes as well, but it really just left it feeling unfinished. If they were going to make an alternate ending with the "happily ever after" for Ted and Tracey, I feel they should have either: A- ended with their wedding, or B-flash forward to their later years, perhaps ending with Ted and Tracey sitting with their grandchildren, and you hear Ted say: "Kids, did I ever tell you how I met your grandma?"

I find most of the reviews on here for S9 bewildering. I've watched S1-8 several times but only recently purchased S9 and watched it in one go (actually rewatched the whole series in one go over the past month). Never before have I seen a sitcom that stays true to its characters like HIMYM does. The evolution of the characters is realistic, slow and eminently believable. The things that change in the characters as well as the stubborn things that don't change strike an all too familiar chord and resonate deeply with me. The evolution of the plotline is likewise remarkably coherent and (to me) reads like a polished novel (when seen as a whole). It just makes sense. I'm sensing a lot of dashed expectations on the part of other reviewers in terms of how they believe the show should have ended. What no one seems to comment on is how fully and how cleverly the writers painted a picture of the mother that stayed true to all the little hints we've received over the years. Everything just all came together towards the end in showing us this charming girl and Ted's long journey in meeting her. Along the way, the jokes never grew stale, the wit and sheer cleverness of plot never fading. If only a tiny fraction of shows on TV were this coherent and meticulously planned! As for the ending, it made *perfect sense* in light of everyone's personalities. Once again, I'm baffled at people calling it cheap or contrived or forced. Anything else would have been a 90 degree turn in the characters' personalities - sometimes s*** happens, life ain't perfect but you make the best of it. If only a tiny fraction of shows on TV had been this realistic. Yes, I say realistic because recall that every episode is a *memory*, narrated by Ted. If things seem too perfectly orchestrated, well duh, that's how memories work - they work backwards, after the fact, to paint a fantastic picture that is an exaggeration of reality. Even this point has been made (cleverly - how else?) in a handful of episodes.

Bottom line - I've watched a *lot* of sitcoms. This is the only one that always left me with a smile during and at the end of every episode - no matter how nominally sad it may be pegged as. This season was sheer genius - it took a lot of chances but pulled off nearly every brave trick it tried. The nonlinearlity is legen ... wait for it...dary! But the season does need to be viewed as a whole to get the full effect. Kudos!

...to see the slaptastic final season of How I Met Your Mother. It's been quite a journey over the previous eight seasons to get here and taken as a whole, the ninth and final season of HIMYM has its ups and downs but it's all worth it for the amazing ending.

There has been much discussion of the supposed shortcomings and inconsistencies of this ninth season, not all of it accurate, but I'm not going to dwell on this as ultimately it isn't a debate that can be won on logic. Suffice to say that the ninth season works as it is and I urge anyone who feels disappointed by the unexpected ending to watch the entire series again from season 1 because there are so many hints and signposts along the way to what will finally happen.

Many fans, quite understandably, expected the final episode to finish with Ted and Tracy walking hand-in-hand into the sunset while the credits rolled but that isn't always how life works out and with so many happy-ever-after endings out there already HIMYM dares to be different for which I give the creators full credit.

If you want something easier or more predictable then the final disc does include an alternate version of the last episode which may appeal more to some viewers or alternatively, you could try to find a different long-running comedy about a group of twenty-somethings living in Manhattan...shouldn't be too hard!

How I Met Your Dad.
