NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Looking to start a healthier lifestyle in the new year?

As we approach 2022, many people are making New Year’s resolutions to make healthier decisions but, starting that change can be intimidating.

Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito, author of several cookbooks including “Cook Your Butt Off!: Lose Up to a Pound a Day with Fat-Burning Foods and Gluten-Free Recipes,” told 1010 WINS that he is often asked how to get started on a healthy diet and his best advice is always to make “incremental change over a long period of time.”

One of his quick tips to start includes cutting just 100 calories per day by:

- Switching from butter to fruit jam on toast

- Removing sugar from coffee or tea

- Having a baked potato over a serving of French fries.

DiSpirito also thinks that with excessive alcohol consumption in the month of December during the holidays, people should consider having “a less wet January.”

In the new year, he also suggests making healthy swaps in everyday cooking by:

- Switching to lean proteins, including anything “grass-fed”

- Swapping to plant-based foods

- Eating larger servings of vegetables

- Adding a salad to daily meals

- Eating more fibers to feel full

DiSpirito also noted that one of the most important changes that people can make to start a healthier lifestyle is increasing their water intake.

“Start your day with two cups of water or a large bottle of water and having a shake that contains 30 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber,” he said. “You will see there'll be a massive change in your energy and how hungry [you are] and how much you crave throughout the day.”
