For most women in their 50s, working out becomes a battle to avoid bat wings. But that's not an issue for 52-year-old Jodie Foster, judging by her well-toned upper arms at a recent awards ceremony. She credits daily Pilates for keeping her mind and body in tip-top shape.
What to try: The front curl is a Pilates-style move that can tone and strengthen upper arms. Stand upright with arms in front of you, palms facing up. Keep shoulders down and level, pulling shoulder blades together.
Make loose fists with your hands and curl them up by bending your elbows, so your hands touch your shoulders at the top of the move.
Squeeze bicep muscles and hold for eight to ten seconds, then extend arms forward and back down to the start position. Repeat 15 to 20 times.
