Garibaldi

Collins glass filled with frothy orange juice and Campari garnished with an orange wedge

An iconic cocktail named for Giuseppe Garibaldi, a revolutionary who played a leading role in the unification of Italy. The bittersweet Campari, from Milan, represents the north, while oranges from Sicily represent the south. The key is very fresh orange juice, which creates a beautiful froth. For extra frothy juice, dry shake or blend in a blender on high for a few seconds before adding. Excellent for brunch or as an aperitif.

Ingredients

Makes 1 drink

1½ oz. (45 ml) Campari
4 oz. (120 ml) fresh orange juice
Orange wedge, to garnish

Preparation

  1. Add the Campari to a Collins or highball glass filled with ice. Top with orange juice and stir. Garnish with an orange wedge.

  • Yum! Also tried swapping out the Campari with a local amaro I'm into these days (Arbutus Distillery Amaro NO. 4) and it was equally tasty...

  • I’m unsure why the other reviewer gave this such a low score when his review focused on making the drink better. I added the egg white, which did exactly as suggested. This is an simple and excellent little cocktail. It’s not complex, but it doesn’t need to be.

  • Fresh, silky and bright. An easy way to easy into brunch. Also good for folks who don’t love the taste of alcohol. It’s not quite mocktail, but it is accessible like one.

  • If you really want to make the Garibaldi shine, add one egg white to the ingredients in the shaker and shake for at least 5 minutes or more. Sounds crazy, I know but the froth-meringue will take it over the top of a regular cocktail to spectacular.
