Copenhagen City Centre

Copenhagen
Copenhagen which includes a bay or harbor
Brimming with cultural institutions, museums, attractions, fine dining and charming canals, the heart of this Danish city is the place to be.

With its artistic treasures, exciting urban life, iconic canals and royal and political history, Copenhagen City Centre is the best place to begin your city exploration. The heart of the city includes the area within Sortedam Lake, Peblinge Lake and Sankt Jørgens Lake and covers Old Town and Christianshavn.

Stay in Copenhagen City Centre for easy access to the city’s top attractions. The heart of the city is easily walkable, with several sites huddled around Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square). Spend an hour or two exploring the pedestrian thoroughfare of Strøget, which leads through the heart of Old Town and offers a multitude of shopping opportunities, from the budget-minded to haute couture.

Learn about the fascinating history of Copenhagen at the Museum of Copenhagen, a great first stop to familiarize yourself with the city’s origins and royal background. Learn how Copenhagen was founded as a fishing town in 1167, then watch as its history unfolds over the centuries to include wars with Sweden and Norway, as well as important contributions to academia and the design world.

Take your history lesson outside at nearby Kastellet, a 17th-century, star-shaped fortress and popular urban green space. You may enter at the King’s Gate or Norway Gate to explore the military barracks and enjoy excellent views of the capital city, its harbor and its iconic Little Mermaid statue. Explore the three on-site museums, an 18th-century Baroque church and a replica of an 18th-century windmill.

Stroll past the crooked houses and along the narrow streets of Christianshavn, one of Copenhagen’s oldest neighborhoods. Climb the spiral staircase to the top of the Church of Our Saviour, wander along the pretty canals and pop into trendy restaurants. Expect hygge by the handful in this charming neighborhood, made up of small islands and easily explored by bike, on foot or from the water.

Travel to Copenhagen City Centre by taxi, train, bus or metro. Ride-share services are also available within the city. Once there, though, take to walking to best soak up the historic vibe of this captivating city center.
