Mario Batali Weighs In on the Great Cargo Shorts Debate of 2016

Splash News

Depending on how you look at it, Mario Batali is a walking fashion disaster or a DGAF icon for the ages. We're going to throw a curveball out there and go with the latter. Gotta respect a man who, despite years of ridicule, refuses to abandon his beloved foot monsters Crocs. If anything, he's doubled down on the questionable footwear. God bless him for it.

Speaking of deeply controversial clothing items, we (as in the entire country) are currently embroiled in a divisive debate over the merits/shortcomings of cargo shorts. People have feelings about this. Strong feelings. We're gonna go ahead and assume that you can guess our stance on this (knee-length baggy cargos: bad; slim, above-the-knee ones: good).

But now the legit amazing chef, restaurateur, and good friend of Gwyneth Paltrow has inserted himself into this incredibly contentious issue. Like our pal Leonardo "Finally Won an Oscar" DiCaprio, Batali's firmly in the pro camp! At least that's what we're getting from the ginger-headed chef's salmon cargo shorts worn with orange Crocs plus, okay, some actually cool sunglasses. (The fact that he's wearing said fit while flipping the bird to the paps trying to ruin his family vacation/excuse to eat amazing Italian food only makes this image that much better.) Basically, anyone else would get a firm frown and a shake of the head from us in this situation, but we're giving Batali a pass for being an all-around badass (no, seriously, getting Paltrow to eat on camera could not have been an easy feat).

Could our leniency have something to do with the fact that Batali's newest outpost of his shrine to Italian food and cooking, Eataly, opens a mere stone's throw from GQ headquarters this week? Never! But, hey, Mario, if you want to take us on a tour, give us a call.
