- Carrie presents her first free-lance article to the Vogue editors, who react completely differently: Enid barks it's simply 'her column', so 'not Vogue', but Julian takes to her - perhaps even too much. Richard says he doesn't want to celebrate his birthday but Samantha insists he picks a gift, and he chooses a threesome with a young waitress. When Miranda complains about getting things for her future baby, Charlotte - who is mourning her own motherhood ambition - offers to throw her a baby-shower but is instructed to keep it low-key, almost businesslike, without the usual baby theme.—KGF Vissers
- Carrie starts working at Vogue (for $4.5 a word) and finds out from her acerbic editor Enid (Candice Bergen) that she doesn't have a Vogue idea about relationships. Enid berates Carrie for not having enough understanding of fashion and says her style of writing is still her newspaper column, and that Carrie has only changed the word "sex" to "style". Enid had all sorts of red marks over the article which Carrie finds demeaning to her work. Enid wants less of Carrie in her articles and more advise of design choices for her readers. Stuff like which bags go with which shoes and accessories and so on.
The owner of the magazine Julian (Ron Rifkin) encourages Carrie to find her own voice in Vogue and not be afraid of Enid. Julian tells Carrie to take criticism with a pinch of salt. Carrie gets drunk with Julian before lunch. Julian says that his daughter introduced him to Carrie's column 2 years ago, and he felt that she would be a natural for the magazine.
Carrie asks Julian out to dinner and says she wants to quit. Julian likes Carrie and says he will fix it, so Carrie works for him and not for Enid. Julian points out that since Carrie's father walked out on her, she will always analyze her relationship with men. Carrie completes her article for Vogue and Julian takes Carrie to the Vogue accessories closet to celebrate. Turns out Julian has a thing for Carrie and his wife is having an affair. And Carrie looks at him like her father figure. Carrie goes back to working with Enid.
Miranda is struggling to find time to buy a crib & a stroller for the baby. Steve is unable to help as Miranda feels that he makes shopping too complicated. Charlotte suggests throwing a baby shower for Miranda, and that way she will get all the things that Miranda needs for the baby, as gifts. Miranda gets fed up with her after she tries to make the shower too cutesy. Charlotte constantly interrupts Miranda in the middle of her work trying to expand the scope of the "professional" baby shower that Miranda wanted.
Charlotte then tries to get Miranda to think about all the baby related choices she hasn't made yet and only highlights that Miranda isn't ready for a baby yet. Stuff like birthing plan, what kind of a mother does Miranda want to be (marsupial or stroller), breastfeeding or bottle feeding, baby proofing of the apartment. But eventually Charlotte gives Miranda the shower that Miranda wanted, with fried chicken and no storks.
Charlotte gets emotional at Miranda's shower as this was the shower that she was supposed to have for her own baby. Miranda consoles her.
Samantha wants to give a gift to Richard for his birthday. Richard asks Samantha for a threesome with a 21-year-old. The 21-year-old is Alexa (Rachel Nichols), a waitress at a restaurant that they frequent as a couple. Samantha knows that Richard is having sex with other women. So, either she can be a part of it, or Richard will do it without her. Charlotte warns that when a woman fulfills a man's fantasy, that could blow up the relationship.
Since Richard wanted that, Samantha asks Alexa for the threesome and Alexa agrees. Alex calls Richard "daddy" and he gets rid of her. Richard agrees to go steady with Samantha for now.
