Following up a cryptic message in the newspaper Homer meets up with his mother, who has returned to Springfield in disguise to catch up on all the years they missed together. Although she is subsequently arrested the jury acquit her of all crimes, which infuriates Burns, still unforgiving of her sabotage of his germ warfare plant forty years earlier and who has her arrested on a minor charge of using false names to get into national parks. Homer hi-jacks the bus taking her to prison and, after faking her death, Mother Simpson escapes, leaving another cryptic message to notify Homer that she is safe.
