- Homer discovers that he has an illegitimate half-brother who is now the very successful car manufacturer Herb Powell. The Simpsons are invited to stay at Herb's mansion and, considering Homer to be an average American and typical consumer, Herb asks him to design a new car for the company. It is, however, a total disaster and results in Herb's bankruptcy.—don @ minifie-1
- Grampa has a mild heart attack. Confronted with his own mortality, he reveals to Homer that he has an older half-brother named Herb Powell. Homer searches for Herb, finds him in Detroit, and takes the family to visit him. It turns out that Herb is rich and owns a successful car company. Concerned about foreign competition, Herb invites Homer to design a car for the average American.
- After suffering a mild medical condition after complaining at a local movie theater, Grandpa confesses to Homer that he has a half-brother from an affair before Homer was born. All Grandpa knows of the baby's whereabouts was that they gave the child to the Shelbyville orphanage. Homer takes this information, and goes searching for his brother. He soon finds that his brother was adopted into a family named Powell, giving him the name Herbert, and that he lives in Detroit.
Homer eventually contacts his half-Brother, and Herb invites the family to visit. Upon arrival in Detroit, Homer is surprised to find that Herb runs the Auto Manufacturer 'Powell Motors,' and his brother even resembles him (though while Homer has less hair and a gut, Herb has hair and no gut). Herb even offers Homer a free car, but when Homer expresses to Herb that the vehicles his company makes aren't quite what he's looking for, Herb then has Homer work with his design team, attempting to make a car for the average man.
Homer is not at all sure about designing a car, and Herb's designers take his lowered initiative as a way for them to design a car based on their wants and desires. When Herb finds out that Homer isn't applying himself, he gives Homer a pep talk that sends Homer into the midst of the designers, demanding his own specific wants and desires.
Eventually, the vehicle is revealed...as a green-colored 'monstrosity' with a pricetag of $82000! The creation of the vehicle has bankrupted Herb's company, and he leaves Detroit penniless, claiming he 'has no brother.'
On the family's car trip back to Springfield, Bart tells Homer that he thought the car was 'pretty cool,' making Homer glad that at least someone liked his design.
