- TriviaThe unsub's tattoo (on his upper back, seen when he steps up to the bar after getting out of the pool at the 14-minute mark) is the word VERITAS, Latin for truth.
- GoofsMorgan suggests the killer used a choke hold to kill the victims because it wouldn't leave any signs of trauma. However it is a myth that choke holds don't leave any signs. The only way to asphyxiate a person without leaving evidence of how the victims was killed is Burking, which nobody even mentioned as a possibility.

Pretty good, though the case could have been a little better
Not one of the best Season 3 episodes like "Elephant's Memory", "Lo-Fi", "Seven Seconds" and "Lucky" but it is a better episode than the likes of "Birthright", "Scared to Death" and particularly "Identity" (none of those are bad at all, just that they were episodes that could have done more with their stories).
"In Heat" is another example of an episode that could have done more with its story (feeling somewhat bland in comparison to what made the best Season 3 episodes so good), but credit is due for handling JJ's subplot with sensitivity and with good balance with everything else and for approaching a very touchy and difficult subject with tact and sensitivity.
As always, the production values are great, with the episode being made with class, grit, style and atmosphere. The music is haunting and at times melancholic, and the direction giving the story a brisk and alert pace but allowing the action to breathe too.
JJ's romantic subplot story sees a touching vulnerable side to her and makes her more interesting than she was before. This was back when one appreciated having her in the foreground after being not as prominent as the rest of the cast for a lot of the previous episodes rather than being irritated at the overuse of her and how out of character she became in Seasons 7 and 9 especially. The unsub's conflicted sexuality story is a difficult subject to bring alive to screen and was always going to touch nerves in concept and execution, but was handled as aforementioned with tact and sensitivity as well as honesty rather than in a trivial, biased and judgemental fashion.
Scripting is thought-provoking, with good profiling that makes sense and hardly neglected and very touching team interaction. There are scarier and more interesting unsubs around, but this unsub is hardly bland and "In Heat" doesn't make the mistake of trying too hard to make one feel sorry for him. The acting is very good all round.
Regarding the case itself, it is a little bland in places and could have done with a slightly tighter pace and more tension and suspense. The climax seemed somewhat too convenient as well, and the flirtatious banter is overdone and didn't gel particularly well here, though it's certainly been far worse since.
To conclude, a pretty good episode if not a season high-point. 7/10 Bethany Cox
