- In order to rescue Maggie from a Catholic orphanage, Lisa must solve a series of puzzles to reveal the identity of a gem that will bring peace to Springfield.
- Kent Brockman announces that a solar eclipse is to appear in Springfield, exciting the Simpson family. As the eclipse occurs, we see an Ed Begley, Jr. solar car suddenly stranded on railroad tracks as a train bears down. Fortunately, the train turns out to be an Ed Begley, Jr. solar train, stopping just in time. After Homer's camera obscura breaks, Marge lets Homer use hers. As the family expresses delight at seeing the eclipse, an envious Marge peeks at the solar eclipse, which blinds her. After taking her to the hospital, Dr. Hibbert informs them that Marge's eyes must be covered for two weeks, and she mustn't be put under any stress. Homer, however, does not know how to cook so he enlists the helps of rats, a la Ratatouille. After the house becomes increasingly infested with rats, Homer, Maggie and Santa's Little Helper go to the store to get rat poison. Homer, annoyed with Maggie and Santa's Little Helper's arguing, leaves Maggie on the doorstep of a convent and runs to fetch Santa's Little Helper, who is across a lake. In a twisted turn of events, the nuns take Maggie in and refuse to give Homer his daughter back.
While Homer and Bart attempt to trick Marge into believing Maggie is still at home, Lisa goes undercover as a nun and infiltrates the convent. While there, an elderly nun informs Lisa of an ancient quest for a mystic gem, which in turn will lead her to Maggie. Lisa's first clue is to find the "biggest ring" in Springfield; at first, she assumes it is circular rings, but she learns the biggest ring is the Springfield Bell Tower. Arriving there, she meets Comic Book Guy and Principal Skinner, who tell her the legend of the gem. Comic Book Guy tells her that the gem should appear on the first full moon after a solar eclipse, which is that night. Finally, the three of them conclude that the biggest "ring" in Springfield isn't the Bell Tower, but the RING in the Springfield Sign.
At the Springfield Sign, they are met by Mr. Burns and Smithers. The five work together to learn that Maggie is the gem, or "gem child" who is destined to bring multiple acts of peace to Springfield. Marge, however, takes Maggie back and unwraps her eyes, having been healed by seeing her. In the end, Bart assumes the role of the "gem child", but instead of causing multiple acts of peace in Springfield, he turns it to Hell.
