We open on a motorcycle crash. A man, apparently dead, hit a fire hydrant.
Joan shops with a friend talks about Sherlock and notes that they haven't any good murder cases lately. Her friend Jennifer has a case for them. She wants them to track down a one night stand she had named Tony, a photojournalist. She says it wasn't just a drunken thing and that he might be the one but they didn't give last names or exchange numbers.
Sherlock calls it a wild goose chase and wants her to help with cold cases. She wants to help her friend.
Then they head down to the morgue to play a guessing game with the corpses of unsolved cases. One man presents a lead: the dead motorcyclist on whom Sherlock notes an important tattoo.
They bring the case to Gregson. The man was Leo Bannon, male nurse, happily married, and a deacon at his church. And also a member of the Polish mafia and a hitman back in the day. He seemed "retired" but Sherlock doesn't think he was based on potential garroting marks on his hand. Unfortunately, they don't have a garroted corpse.
They go to speak to his wife who knew he came from a bad life but doesn't think he was a killer. She says to talk to neighbors and friends and they will say he was a wonderful man. Before he died he called to say he loved her and she says finding God changed him. Leo and his wife were going to open a senior care facility and they were collecting investors. Sherlock says he was still a killer and that when you discover that about someone that you love it is excruciating. They ask for help in finding who he might have killed. She says she can't.
Sherlock tries to run down Leo's friends via the condolence cards he swiped from the widow's house. He narrows down a possible dead one named Travis.
Joan heads off to the bar with Jennifer to do work on her missing Tony case. She asks the bartender about him. He doesn't remember him. She notices a poster for Brazilian day.
Sherlock goes after the Travis guy and his secretary shows him a surveillance video of Travis fighting with Leo. And Travis has been missing for three days. She got a text saying he went to New Jersey. Sherlock thinks Leo sent it after disposing of Travis' body in a construction site.
They go to the site. Travis' truck is there. Joan wonders where they dig. Sherlock says Travis isn't at the construction site. He's at a nearby hotel/brothel with hookers. Sherlock is sad to see him alive. They ask him about Leo. The fight over surveillance was about the senior care facility being kaput. Leo gave him 25k which he said he got from a loan shark. Sherlock pockets the money and takes it back to the precinct to run it through the system. The money's from a bank robbery from over 8 years ago. They track down the loan shark that might be responsible for the cash.
Meanwhile, Joan has tracked down video from the bar from the last Brazilian night at which Jennifer met her man. Sherlock suddenly confesses that it was him that slept with Jennifer, using one of his aliases. He blames her for seducing him and notes she's limber. He met her when he used to follow Joan when she was off duty near the beginning of their arrangement and he apologizes. She's mad about the betrayal and the fact that it took him this long to confess.
Sherlock goes to see the loan shark. He says he didn't loan Leo any money nor does he even know who he is. They manage to get out of him that Leo took care of his mom and he was a good guy but then he needed money so he loaned it to him. A few days later he got a visit from a Russian mobster who wanted him to help track Leo down. He resisted but the guy manhandled him and it turns out the guy knew everything that he did.
They now think the Russian mobster killed Leo. Sherlock wants to go to the crash site and look for clues. They investigate further up theroad and find bullet casings and cigarette butts. They figure someone shooting at him caused him to swerve. They look even further back and find the Russian mobster dead: garroted. Now they were wondering who shot at Leo.
Gregson discovers Leo fled Poland after stealing about $30k. They try to figure out who else could have been on the scene and picked up the gun.
Joan and Bell go to see Bannon's widow and tell her the new information. She thinks it was "self-defense" what Leo did to the Russian mobster.
The coroner informs Sherlock the dead mobster had a psychiatrist so they go there to find out about his associates. As they wait, Sherlock notes that she could tell Jennifer that "Tony" died. They work their way into the doctor's office. He's surprised by the news about the dead mobster. He says he forced his way in and when he found out who he was and what he did he kept treating him out of fear. He tells the name of the mobster's right hand man, Marco.
They go to talk to Marco. He has an alibi: he was mugged Saturday night and stabbed and was in the hospital all night.
At home, Sherlock continues to advance the "dead Tony" theory. She dismisses it. Sherlock looks at Marco's police report and notes the tourniquet. He realizes that it came from the drapes at Leo's house. They bring Leo's widow in and confront her. She alerted the men after him where he was and expected him to be killed. Leo fought off Marco and stabbed him and fled. She set the Russian mobster after him after that. She was the one at the scene and picked up the gun and shot at her husband causing the accident. She says that's crazy. Except they found evidence in her house during a search while she was at the precinct house. She comes clean. She made porn as a young woman to get out of Poland and, even though they were taught to forgive as Christians, Leo couldn't forgive her and asked for a divorce. She knew he had a price on his head and made the call.
Joan meets with Jen and she says Sherlock came clean. Joan busts her for sleeping with Sherlock again. Jen admits it. She says Sherlock is now out of her system. Joan comes home and as payback almost has Sherlock believing he got Jen pregnant. He did not.
