- As the years go on, changes cause the group to drift apart, but they reunite one more time for Ted's wedding. Meanwhile, a monumental event causes Barney to finally change his ways.
- The continuing story Ted is telling his kids about how he met their mother picks up in 2020, when his gang of friends were largely the same as at Robin and Barney's wedding, except... Ted and their mother still have not made it to the altar, despite both of the kids already having been born, the delay due to timing issues and wedding priorities. Marshall finally receives that much wanted call telling him that he has been offered a judgeship. It's a few years after Robin and Barney's divorce, with Barney having returned to his carousing ways. A major event that occurred in carrying out the new plays in his playbook ended up having what would be the most profound change in his mentality. The "except" part concerns Robin, who is now largely out of their lives, despite the six of them vowing that they would be there for each other for all the big events. Ted looks back once again to his initial meeting with their mother and why it seemed like destiny to be with her, before he concludes the story with what he believes is its moral. His kids, however, believe there is another underlying reason why he told them the story, a reason he may not even fully realize yet.—Huggo

- Part 2
In 2018, Barney gets ready for another "legendary" night at MacLaren's, even though Ted and Lily, both being parents, aren't intending to stay out late. Marshall arrives and announces he is replacing a retiring judge in Queens, which prompts a celebration. Later, when Barney attempts to score with a young woman, Lily blasts him for fully regressing into his previous self. Barney defends his behavior by telling her that he knows if he couldn't make a marriage with Robin work, he'll never make it work with anyone. Lily relents and Barney leaves to enjoy his night.
In 2019, Ted, the Mother, Marshall and Lily are at Robots Versus Wrestlers. A depressed Barney shows up to say that while he recently completed a "perfect month" using a new Playbook, the last woman is pregnant with his child. Later, Ted runs into Robin, now a famous news reporter, while showing Penny (his daughter) the GNB building he designed. Later, Marshall, Lily, and Ted await the birth of Barney's child. After throwing up in the bathroom, Barney is led in to meet his daughter, Ellie. Despite his initial misgivings, Barney is moved to tears.
At Ted and the Mother's house, Ted re-proposes to the Mother because it has been five years since they got engaged, and says they are getting married the following Thursday. Before the wedding, the gang meets up at MacLaren's, and Marshall announces he is running for the New York State Supreme Court. Barney sees two young women at the bar and approaches them. Lily assumes he will hit on them, but instead sees him scold them for dressing inappropriately, sending them home in a fatherly manner. Lily is genuinely surprised, and even more so when Robin shows up to attend. While reconciling with the gang, Robin admits to Ted that after initially declining to come, the Mother told her to reconsider. Lily gives a toast praising Ted for all he has been through, and Future Ted narrates how he never stopped loving the Mother for a second, even when she became terminally ill and died in 2024.
Returning the story to May 2013, Ted gets the courage to introduce himself to the bass player, and she invites him underneath her yellow umbrella. The two engage in a conversation where she tells Ted she remembers him from when he accidentally taught her Economics class on his first day as a professor. Ted realizes that her umbrella is his umbrella that he left at Cindy's and has his initials on it, but she tells him that T.M. are her initials: Tracy McConnell. Ted continues his conversation with Tracy as the train arrives.
In 2030, Future Ted finishes his story by saying, "And that, kids, is how I met your mother." Penny (Lyndsy Fonseca) and Luke (David Henrie) protest that this was not the point of the story, and deduce that it was actually about how he still has feelings for their "Aunt" Robin. Ted brushes this off, but his kids remind him that they love Robin and that there's still a connection between the two of them whenever she visits. They give Ted their blessings to continue his relationship with her. Initially, Ted calls her but instead, decides to go to her apartment with the blue French horn, presenting it the same way he had 25 years earlier. Robin, who is revealed to be living alone with several dogs, seems moved, and they both smile at each other.
Alternate ending An alternate ending available on the ninth season DVD was leaked online on September 6, 2014. This ending omits the illness story-line. Future Ted summarizes the events of the entire series that led to him meeting the mother, then Ted and Tracy are shown meeting on the train platform. The scene ends with the train appearing in front of the pair and the yellow umbrella floating down the road.
