To be independent we need to be dependent. Let me explain: I recently read a relationship book called “Attached” which changed my life. The book talks about the dependency paradox. By depending on a significant other, each person becomes more independent and capable since they have a secure base. Now the world will tell you to be a strong independent woman/man/pronoun who don’t need no woman/man/pronoun. I believed this too, but science tells us otherwise. Yes weight loss is largely an independent game, but we could all use some help. Someone to help pick us up when we fail, cause it will happen. Someone to make sure we are doing what needs to be done to get to our goals. Someone to celebrate with when we succeed and hit our milestones. Now as a coach I won’t be your boyfriend, but I’ll be there when you need it. Life is better with someone by your side. People usually know what they need to do to start making changes to get to a healthier state. It’s the confidence to follow through- to execute and sustain that change- that they often lack. The belief in oneself and the ability to change is what we call self-efficacy. I recently polled a few fitness groups on what they valued the most in their trainer or coach, and the top answer that showed up over and over with different verbiage was that they appreciated someone believing in them and teaching them to believe in themselves.
