A friend mentioned that HOPE Matchmakers can be used to attach new Shimano (mine are Deore XT 2010, 9speed) shifters to Avid (Elixir R Carbon) levers.

Is this possible? Does it require a hack? Which matchmaker should one buy?

Kind regards,
Conti

Yes it works, but it doesn't look good (Hope raw aluminium versus painted clamp on the avids).Maybe hand painted ? Anyway:

Get the XT one (since you have XT shifters).

Some French guy bought it and tried it with his CR Carbon and XT shifters (so your setup, more or less) and here's the result:

Thankyou Ploutre. Very kind of you.

Any idea of what the weight saving would be? 40g per shifter?

In total he got about 51 grams, for both shifters. Smile

Ho hum. I think most of that is probably captured in removing the indicators, which you can do without the matchmaker. Probably not the most efficient £25 ever spent on a bike!

Thanks anyway!

He did that to gain some free space on the handlebars (for the seatpost remote and poplock), not for the weight. As for the weight of the parts:

2 Indicators = 23gr
2 Avid clamps = 9gr
2 Shimano shifter clamps = 47gr

So it's not only the indicators afterall...

When you want them in black you've to buy de Hope "Race" Machmaker and not the "Tech" one.
