The Mentalist - Episode 4.07 - Blinking Red Light - Review

4 Nov 2011

Blinking Red Light, the seventh episode of this season’s The Mentalist, does something that it is known to do well i.e. delve into the mind of a serial killer. And it also marks a powerful albeit predictable return of the Red John mythology to the show, however brief it may be.

This episode is the second one directed by the series star, Simon Baker. It seems like Simon Baker gets the pick of the litter to direct as the last one he directed, Red Moon, was one of the best episodes of the third season. Blinking Red Light, for me, is the best episode of this season so far.

The story of the episode involves a hunt for a serial killer known by the name ‘San Joaquin Killer’. CBI investigates a case that turns out to be the fourth victim of this killer. This killer slits the throats of young women and dumps them in random spots away from the original crime scene. Among the eight suspects that the CBI knows about, a man by the name Richard Haibach, played by William Mapother (known for his stint on LOST), is given most of the focus as Lisbon believes that he is the best bet for the SJ Killer.

Jane, as usual, pursues his own line of investigation which leads him to a blogger and investigative crime reporter, James Panzer, who has been tracking the killer since two years. Now, anyone who is familiar with the show will tell you that the show is predictable. They never keep the stories too complicated which encourages the viewers to try to figure out the killer as the investigation goes on, something that is part of the show’s appeal. But, what this episode does well, and what I appreciate most about this episode is how it embraces its own predictability. Half way through the episode, it becomes clear as day that James Panzer himself is the SJ Killer and they don’t beat around the bush about it. Jane immediately lets the others know about his suspicions, which is new for him. But without evidence there is not a lot that can be done.

Patrick uses Panzer’s need for attention against him and sets up a trap for him by not-so-subtly letting the media (Karen Cross, played by Missi Pyle, makes an appearance with a new show different from the one we saw her in last time around) know that the killer has been identified and will be apprehended by the next morning. But Jane underestimates Panzer’s cunning and the trap collapses on itself and they end up losing the case to the FBI.

This makes things difficult for Jane to catch Panzer in the act. So, he shifts strategy and decides to crash Panzer’s interview on ‘The Karen Cross Show’ where he spouts wild conjecture about SJ Killer to wind Panzer up and almost succeeds in doing so. But Jane underestimates Panzer again as he had for the entire episode and Panzer is able to catch on to Jane’s tricks. Jane finally uses what would have been his last resort and steers the conversation towards Red John, knowing full and well that one, Red John is not dead and two, Panzer, who seemed to project his narcissism through his SJ Killer alter ego, will talk smack about him.

The next thing you know, Jane gets a call and he reaches the crime scene and the last shot we see is that of Panzer's dead body and surprise, surprise, there is a giant, bloody Red John smiley keeping the body company.

The writing, by Ken Woodruff, is one of the better writing efforts I have seen this season, so far. The performances are all on par across the board. There aren’t many issues I have with the episode although I wonder how Red John, for the brilliant mind he is portrayed as being, gets offended so easily. Additionally, looking at Red John’s response time, it feels as though this guy sits in front of the TV waiting for someone to talk about him. The only other explanation is that Red John keeps tabs on Patrick Jane twenty-four-seven. But that is just nit picking when you look at the whole episode which was really good. Here’s hoping for more coherent and extensive Red John stories.

  2. Awesome review! It was an amazing episode. I just love how predictable it all was until Jane looks into the TV camera on the Karen Cross show and you just know what's going on here. Red John knows everything about Jane, he is as obsessed with Jane as Jane is obsessed about him. When Panzer started speaking against Red John, the look on Jane's face is undeniable. As if for a few seconds, a moment of déjà vue embraces him. Poor Jane. At the end, whe he walks up to the RJ smiley and he's smiling. He's happy his plan worked and now he has proof that RJ is very much out there, and Timothy Carter wasn't him.

This brings on so many questions. How will Lisbon react to all this (even though there wasn't much reaction from her at the end). How this will affect Jane in the coming episodes, considering he was trialed for Timothy Carter's murder as if he had been Red John. So far I think Jane only confessed to Lisbon that RJ was still out there, so how will the others react to this?

Season 4 is fantastic. This episode is just another amazing hour of The Mentalist.

  4. Thank you, that's very kind.

See:Double Jeopardy, a person cannot be tried for the same crime again. Jane is free and clear of the murder even though it turns out that Timothy was not Red John. That's just how the system works.

That's something I thought of adding to the review. There was that burning question in Jane's mind if he could bring out Red John out in the open. Panzer was his tethered goat. The prey that you leave to entice the predator. And, Jane will now be sure as ever that Red John is alive and others will believe him.

  6. Only question I have is....If Jane knew Red John was going after SJK...Why did he not try to bag Red John as well by keeping tabs on SJK after the broadcast?...Makes you wonder?????

  7. Great review!
As I was watching the final moments of the interview, I couldn't believe how clever in a sense Jane was, using a serial killer to kill another serial killer, plus the big reveal (to everyone else, not us the viewers) that Red John it's still out there.
    Brillant episode.

  8. Your review was great, thanks !
I agree with you : this was one of the best episode of the season (if not the best). But it was also kind of disturbing for me because it showed something we had all seen coming : Jane is turning into a sociopath (or already has been for a long time but we can't deny it any longer). I think the fact that he's sentencing a man to death without blinking or, worse, his smile in the end proved it. I wonder how Lisbon will react, since she's the only one to know about Red John and hence will know what Jane had done. But she wasn't mad at him when he killed Timothy Carter, even if it was something she spent years trying to convince him not to do, so maybe she'll just ignore it again.
As for Red John, I'm wondering if he didn't kill Panzer just to "indulge" Jane because, me too, I think it's hard to believe he has such a big ego and can't stand criticism to this extent. Maybe he's pleased his puppet is becoming inhuman too (I know, Panzer was an evil killer but the fact that he couldn't catch him wasn't a reason to get him killed !) and hopes Jane will be horrifed when he'll make him realize they getting more and more alike.
I have to say that I'm a little bit disappointed though : I was expecting an awful murder for RJ's return that would have hit the team close to home for example... After all he's proving to everyone that he's not dead so it seemed logical for me he'd do something big.
Sorry for the huge comment, and sorry if there are mistakes in it, I'm not so good with english...

  9. As for the response time, it might not be the same night (which I thought it was, initially). I rewatched the last couple of minutes and noticed that Lisbon and the FBI lady are wearing different clothes than earlier in the day (couldn't tell about Patrick :). Panzer looked like he might be wearing the same suit as in the interview but couldn't really tell as his body was blurred. It's also possible that the blogger was indeed killed the same night but his body discovered next day perhaps.
I did wonder a lot, however, about the response time after Jane's unfortunate television appearance. It seemed he killed Patrick's family the very same night. So I suspect he's had his eyes trained on Jane even before he "insulted" him. Or he's Big Brother. Or watches live Twitter feed for RedJohn 24/7... ;)

  10. even if it's not the same night... but it's not like Red John just gets up and decides to kill someone... For him never to be caught, I'd have to imagine he does a lot of planning before killing someone, if it's the same night or the next, the response time sure is quick...

  11. yeah... Red John is not stupid, if Jane was keeping an eye on what's going on, it would never draw Red John out... for Jane, I think, this whole thing was about confirming his suspicion that Red John is still active.

  12. yes, could be that Red John is amused by what he has turned Jane into and he threw him a bone by taking out Panzer. For all we know, Red John did not even know that Panzer was SJK.

  13. Thanks for the reply.....My guess is that Jane knew Red John was still lurking and would act on Panzer's comments...Jane gave him just enough rope to hang himself...Jane was taken off the case and knew that SJK would kill again so he probably feels he did what he had to do under the circumstances.....I agree Red John is not stupid... but has been able to outmanuever Jane and the CBI in the past so not sure if Jane monitoring SJK would have  kept him from getting to Panzer and making him pay for his words of bravado on the telecast. Maybe Jane just wanted SJK stopped? but it is unusual that Jane passed on this situation to strike when the odds are high that Red John would respond to the telecast in the exact manner he has in the past....Anyways loved the episode and your review thanks!

Red John has a large network of people in his pocket

  15. It is probably the explanation, yes, but it is still remarkable that he is able to obtain from his underlings such meticulous details that enable him to kill his victims without a slightest blunder so quickly. Oh, well.

  16. I found the premise of the ending brilliant but somehow it felt a little too straight-forward and predictable. I mean usually RJ kills a person's family (or his lackies when he doesn't need them anymore) like with Patrick. But maybe the smiley face was just a message to Patrick, because I think RJ knew what game Patrick was playing and decided to play along, kill Panzer and effectively say (to the world) "ok, I'm alive and kicking and here's a dead body like you wanted".

  17. Red John loves Jane and i think he realized Jane wanted a favour from him so he killed panzer for him lol. OMG i love this show.

  18. I just watched this episode yesterday and the flaws in it are just forcing me to write something.
It was clear when they shown the red camera light what Jane wants to do: make Panzer talk crap about Red John which would drive that psycho into killing him, just like he did to Jane's family.
At that moment I expected CBI to track Panzer somehow and try to catch Red John, and that Red John will anticipate that and do something they didn't foresee showing Jane he is few steps in front of him.
But no! Jane suddenly got a bad case of retarditis or just stopped going after Red John, wow...
