Description

Learn about plants while following the scientific method. This hands-on unit goes above and beyond just growing plants. Three activities included each with a student journal to guide their way. Simple supplies that can be modified. All directions provided to create a light hut or use one of your own. Great for springtime science.

Plants are great to grow with students. The problem is a classroom does not provide the right environment. Learn how to create a light hut. It will provide the light and heat needed for seeds to sprout and plants to grow. You won't believe how quickly seeds sprout. Simple to make and great results. Typically seeds sprout out of the soil in 3-4 days.

All experiments can also be performed with manufactured light huts, greenhouses, and other plant lights. You can also place on a windowsill.

In activity 1 students demonstrate keeping things constant. They will grow 3 cups with seeds and observe their growth.

In activity 2 students follow the scientific method to answer the question:

Does the depth a seed is planted affect the number of leaves that will grow?

They will learn what the independent and dependent variables are. They will collect data, graph, and write a summary.

In activity 3 students take the lead. They will use the 4 question strategy to come up with their own plant investigation. This can be done as a whole class, in groups, or individually. This is great for a class or individual science fair project.

Students will enjoy growing plants and investigating.

Teachers will love its’ ease of use, the success of the light hut, and watching students think scientifically. Each investigation builds upon the other, but can also be performed independently. The light hut is great to integrate with current growing projects too.
