Description

Do your students struggle with reading comprehension? This Life Cycle of a Plant Reader will solve that problem because it has real photos of vocabulary words that are thematic and help young students make better connections. There is also a simple song with the words so it helps students to retain the words and enjoy the story.

  • It is perfect for teaching words about the needs of a plant. With our books, nouns aren’t just nouns, now they are pictures in the child’s mind.
  • Students will learn the words SEED, ROOTS, STEM, LEAVES  and FLOWER.

  • The real photos have been great for my ESL and emergent learners!
  • This reader is great for homework because we have included a guide on what to do with these books.

Check out our Plant Life Cycle Unit which includes our original plant song, science sheets, ELA sheets and math sheets.

  • Help parents teach about Plant Parts in this simple reader as well as practice reading,  vocabulary and do phonics all with this one resource!

  • There is a page with the words that they can highlight as well as illustrate for their poetry notebooks. My students love going back to these songs and they have helped them to retain the words, so it is improving their reading as well as their knowledge about science and social studies.

  • Sometimes I catch a couple of students singing the songs together as they practice reading the books together.

  • We have included a teacher guide on how to use the literacy boxes on the pages of the emergent readers. We like to use them to teach phonetic elements in the words. It really helps our students to see the connections in the words. It makes a great supplement for science of reading.

  • We have just added word wall  vocabulary cards with the real photos from the book. I display them at the beginning of our unit on plants and they help my students to make connections with how all the words relate to each other.

  • There is a teacher guide on how to use the cards. The real photos have helped my ESL students to better understand the vocabulary words. Students like using them in the writing center. It helps them to stay on topic as they write.

  • We also just added differentiated worksheets that reinforce the vocabulary words and sight words.  Students cut and paste and put the words in sentence order.

  • There are sheets with 4 words and sheets with 6 words. Students practice handwriting when they copy the sentence, then they will illustrate the sentence and there is a bonus sentence or question at the bottom of each worksheet that will enhance critical thinking skills.

I love using them in literacy centers during guided reading. I have also used them in my guided reading groups, especially when I first introduce how to complete the sheets. The bonus questions at the end of the worksheets generate great discussions in reading groups.

Sight Words that are highlighted on the worksheets:

FAQ

1. How can I use these books if I am limited on paper?

We have included directions on how to print front and back to conserve paper.

Copy enough books for a center or a guided reading group and laminate all the pages, so students can write on them with dry erase markers. This way you can also use them year after year.

2. Why are there empty boxes on the pages?

We call those literacy boxes. We use them to reinforce word features that are in the vocabulary words. We have included a teacher guide with ideas on how to use them.

3. How can I use the picture word cards?

We have a teacher guide with ideas. When you have finished teaching the theme, place the cards in a manilla folder or one of those photo boxes we mention in the guide and use them in a writing center.

4. What is a lyric sheet?

It is a single sheet with all the words from the book. Students highlight the words and illustrate it and put them in a poetry folder to review. This also makes a great center or for early finishers. We sing the song during morning meeting.

5. Do the worksheets with 4 words have the same reinforced vocabulary words and sight words as the sheets with 6 words?

Yes, so you can teach the same vocabulary and sight words to the whole class and then use the differentiated sheets to meet students’ needs.
